VHS : An Angel At My Table [1990]
This is an enjoyable film. It has the beautiful scenery of New Zealand along with the harsh realities of how incommpassionate humans can be towards each other. It shows how adversity can triumph eventually. The three actresses who take the lead role in the various periods of Janet's life in this trilogy are excellant. The film is worth watching, but can seem "drawn out" at times; overcome that, and you have a good film.

VHS : The Piano [1993]
I had this film on video tape, and it has been watched, and loaned out to friends so many times, it's worn out. So, I had to but the DVD!!!!!!!!!!!
The special edition DVD is fascinating because if you already love the film, you are given an insight into the mind of the writer. I also loved watching the interview with the composer, being a keen piano player. The film is quite dark, dramatic and moody and the music is beautiful, matching perfectly the whole feel of the movie. Oh, and Holly Hunter actually plays the piano! Buy it!You won't be disappointed.

VHS : Muriel's Wedding [1995]
It's only recently that i've seen Muriel's wedding, and i loved it to bits from start to finish. Its basically about a misfit Abba loving geek in her twenties that is going nowhere in life, but dreams of getting married one day, her popular friends have dumped her and it seems it's over for her until she meets Rhonda, and it takes off from there, they soon become best friends and find that they both have plenty in common, but the fun doesn't last long, Rhonda gets confined to a wheelchair due to the discovery that she has cancer, but things are still looking up for Muriel as she will soon be having a `fake' marriage to help a world champion, super fit swimmer win. It looks like her prayers have been answered (obviously not for him who is less than ... Read More:

I remember watching this film when i was growing up and decided to have a flashback so i went online to buy this little beutie of a film.

I forgot how much i loved the character of Farmer hogget, amazingly played and he makes me feel all warm inside, wish he was my grandad :P

VHS : Dead Calm [1989]
In an age of over-budgeted films, this stands out as being a classic for it's non-nonsense approach that engages you into the endless miles of open water, and the exciting, though daunting, thought of being in the middle of a rescue and hostage situation.

Billy Zane, who plays a homicidal maniac, puts in a strong performance which he seems to adapt better than his more 'sane' roles. Sam Neil offers his usual calm and content style that matches well with the ideology of calm open water, while Nicholle Kidman's take on his spouse is perhaps a little wooden, but these were early days for the actress, and it's credit that she took on the role so well.

Dead Calm is not your 'modern-thriller', in which story and directing take second place. It is an ... Read More:

VHS : Portrait Of A Lady [1997]
We rented this film because we were so impressed by many of its good reviews. However, we felt let down when we saw it. Much of the filming was done in very poor light (presumably deliberately), and even when the sun shone outside, it seemed that the camera preferrred to stay in the shadows. Despiute the fact that some reviewers loved this film, we found its pace achingly slow, focussing upon a lead character with whom we had no empathy. After half an hour or so we were so bored we abandoned watching this film.
