VHS : Tobruk [1967]
This is a great war classic, equal to the Guns of Navarone and far better then the later Raid on Rommel, which took many scenes from Tobruk. A DVD version of this classic would be most welcome.

2.Dunkirk [1958] starring: John Mills, Robert Urquhart, Ray Jackson, Meredith Edwards, Anthony Nicholls
directed by: Leslie Norman

VHS : Dunkirk [1958]
Brilliant! Historic film from WW2 showing true British 'grit' and shows the true meaning of the 'Dunkirk Spirit'. Keeps to events and Sir John Mills gives a very good performance.

VHS : Shane [1953]
I shall always remember the thrill as a small boy when my parents took me to a local cinema to watch a western. Randolph Scott and particularly Joen McCrea were the order of the day at the time. But Shane was such a hard act to follow regular westerns were just not the same after. Shane played by Alan Ladd, was so good that even with the enhanced photography of today there are not many westerns that can hold a candle to this thoughtful film.

It is interesting that the original intended casting was for Montgomery Clift to play the part of Shane and for William Holden to portray Joe Starrett. Whilst I can see the logic of these selections, Katharine Hepburn as the Mrs. Starrett just does not seem right somehow.

This film is fun! Errol is starting to look a bit ragged but he still has that old charisma which is what this film is all about. He sings too! The action is good, the story surprisingly original but is let down by a weak ending.

5.Hombre [1966] starring: Paul Newman, Fredric March, Richard Boone, Diane Cilento, Cameron Mitchell

VHS : Hombre [1966]
I saw this film first in 1967, and many, many times since, and westerns just don't get better than this. Paul Newman is at his very best, Richard Boone is at his very nastiest (and best), the humour is, like Cool Hand Luke, subtle and funny. If all that is not enough, there is a real story behind it, and the good guy doesn't win. Just like life
What a shame we cannot get it in PAL format

6.The Green Berets [1968] starring: John Wayne, Luke Askew, Irene Tsu, David Janssen, Jim Hutton
directed by: John Wayne, Ray Kellogg
June 19, 2000
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

VHS : The Green Berets [1968]
Wayne avoided military service during World War Two, and it shows in the movie. For example, Wayne repeatedly uses his rifle to gesture toward someone, a flagrant mistake that a recruit with one week of training would not make. Appropriately, at the movie's end the sun sinks in the east as Wayne and a Vietnamese child gaze out to sea. The movie's grasp of the war in Vietnam is as confused as its grasp of geography.

7.The Wooden Horse [1950] starring: Leo Genn, David Tomlinson, Anthony Steel, David Greene, Peter Burton
directed by: Jack Lee (III)

VHS : The Wooden Horse [1950]
Extraordinary story as to how Eric Williams, Oliver Philpott and partner escaped from Stalag Luft 3.
Very ingenious, much more so than The Great Escape and without the histrionics, the film is a straight forward retelling of the story of the Escape done in a very British, underplayed style.
It is not in colour and not a charismatic as The great Escape but it is completely true and quite staggering in it's bravado.
A best selling book in the U.K. eric williams went on to write others, specifically of canal cruising in the Europe of the fifties.

8.How The West Was Won starring: Carroll Baker, Lee J. Cobb, Henry Fonda, Carolyn Jones, Karl Malden

It's about time this was released as it was meant to be seen.
I'm just wondering if they've managed to get rid of those three seperate lines completely

9.The Good, The Bad And The Ugly (Collector's Edition) [1966] starring: Eli Wallach, Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef, Aldo Giuffrè, Luigi Pistilli

VHS : The Good, The Bad And The Ugly (Collector's Edition) [1966]
This is by far the best western i have ever watched and will ever watch running for nearly three hours The Good The Bad And The Ugly is a must have for any collector of fine movies.

Ennio Morricone's unforgettable soundtrack provides the pacing for the film and Clint Eastwood's acting provides and supports Eli Wallach's comments and cristicisms throughout the film.

VHS : Sergeant York [1941]
Gary Cooper was 40 years old when he made "Sergeant York," and his Southern accent is weak at best, but those things do not end up detracting all that much from his performance or this film. Directed in 1941 by Howard Hawks, "Sergeant York" has strong propagandistic elements. A whiskey-drinking hell-raiser, Alvin C. York undergoes a religious conversation when lighting strikes his gun and almost kills him. His goal in life becomes getting himself a piece of bottom land so he can propose to Gracie Williams (Joan Leslie). Things go against him, but Alvin holds his temper and does what the Good Book tell him to do. Then World War I breaks out and Alvin is drafted. Unable to get status as a conscientious objector because of his religious beliefs, Alvin has to come to terms with the ... Read More:
