VHS : The Matrix [1999]
I had always enjoyed watching this movie for all the reasons stated in other reviews, but last night I sat through an hour and fifty odd minutes of the director's cut of "Dark City" - released in 1998 and totally ignored by the majority of critics and film goers. In fact, The Director's Cut copy I had was given to me by a friend and, as far as I know, is not available in this country. The plot of this film is about a populace trapped in a perpetually dark city, which is closed down and re-tuned by the controllers. Memories are altered, people put into other slots in the society, and the entire landscape altered as part of the experiment. Essentially it's The Matrix, but without all the silly Kung Fu, shouting and shooting and the pseudo religious ... Read More:

VHS : Goldfinger [1964]
Gimmicky, disjionted, over reliant on this new gadgetry which was suddenly very appealing to a fast growing consumerist society, it has far less of the essence of James Bond as in the Flemming novels than previous Bond movies. It has things in it that make it memorable, but its biggest fault was to take us down the 'wealthy mad man with a fiendish weapon of mass destruction tucked away in a holed out volcano, with a couple of hundred uniformed henchmen-cum-mercenaries happily working for him' storyline, the kind of stuff which gave Mike Myers so much material with which to ridicule the formula. It is only Pussy Galore that stops me giving this movie the dreaded one star treatment. Really, this was not the path to take our beloved 007 down. You want a proper ... Read More:

VHS : Sharpe's Siege [1996]
This is probably the most satisfying of the "Sharpe" series. Although differing from the book in some key ares ( the absence of the Americans for one, and no mention of the USA entering the war on Bonaparte's side) it retains the excitement and characterisation we have come to expect.

What gives it added enjoyment is the interplay between Sharpe and Harper which has rarely been as understated or witty. The scene where Harper pulls out his own tooth is touching and amusing, with Sean Bean giving full rein to his Yorkshire accent - "Go on Patrick, get t'bugger out!".

The framing of the story between Sharpes wife Jane falling ill as he sets out and his return is also handled well. The villainous Ducos is for once edged down, by ... Read More:

VHS : Return From The River Kwai [1988]
What a disappointment. The original Bridge on the River Kwai may have been fiction - but based in facts of life as a PoW during WW2 Burma/Thailand... An all time classic film. The return may have been in more fact but wooden acting, lacking story and depth throughout. A bore of a film.

VHS : The Heroic Trio II
An excellent sequel to the amazing 'Heroic Trio' reuniting Michelle Yeoh, Anita Mui and Maggie Cheung. In wake of nuclear disaster, and the rising of a mad man, the 'Herioc trio' must reunite to restore order. It takes a while for them to come together, but Michelle Yeoh's performance is excellent, especially in her fighting sequences. The story keeps you watching as you wait to see what happens to each of them, and the final action sequence is amazing and the ending just as shocking.

VHS : Mad Max 3 - Beyond Thunderdome [1985]
A thunderous and wondrous action adventure which happens to be a personal favourite of mine from the eighties. Massively underrated in its day and long forgotten by audiences over the years, Beyond Thunder dome is one of those cult classics that succeeds due to the breathtaking visuals, beautiful production design and sheer wealth of imagination on display.

Mel Gibson takes a large portion of his performance from Clint Eastwood's "Man with no name" character of the "Dollars trilogy" movies and evolves the stone cold character of entries 1 & 2 into a much more sympathetic creation. And any film that casts a terrific Tina Turner in the role of arch villainess deserves applause for originality, which this film is full to the brim with. The sets look absolutely ... Read More:
