VHS : Culloden [1964]

I remember watching parts of this many years ago and decided to rent it and watch in full.
I'm just amazed that this film has not been brought to new generations. It's such an important statement, Scottish history apart this film applies to any modern day conflict. I've seen this sort of conflict first hand and as far as Peter Walkins movie goes it doesn't really matter if it is culloden, Ireland, Iraq, Africa, you will always get bloodthirsty soldiers, scared soldiers, sympathetic soldiers and you will always get innocent, non-combatant civilians caught in the middle. Make Culloden an Educational resource if nothing else.

VHS : The Magnificent Two [1967]
Morecambe & Wise embark on a journey to sell toy soldiers, and get mixed up in a political war. The scene where Eric has to be shot is side-splittingly funny. From the opening scene when they do a mock battle with the toys,to the end credits I did not stop laughing, Eric and Ernie at the top of the tree.
This is in my opinion the best film they made, it has a good story line and the plot is easy to follow, my 10 year old son was in hysterics when watching it. A must have for any video collection. If you cant buy it, beg, borrow, or steal it. Must be seen!!!!

VHS : The Ghost Goes West [1935]
Robert Donat is in fine form in this classic comedy about a displaced ghost trying to keep ownership of his family's castle from straying to rivals of his clan.

The humour is quick witted and stylish, the acting first rate and the premise fantastic!

As they say - they don't make them like this anymore!

"In the days after it first opened in early 1964, Stanley Kubrick's "Dr. Strangelove" took on the enchanted aura of a film that had gotten away with something. Johnson was in the White House, the Republicans were grooming Goldwater, both sides took the Cold War with grim solemnity, and the world was learning to be comfortable with the term "nuclear deterrent," which meant that if you blow me up, I'm gonna blow you up, and then we'll all be dead. "Better dead than Red," some said. Others said the opposite. The choice was not appealing. The Bomb overshadowed global politics. It was a kind of ultimate hole card in a game where the stakes were life on earth." Roger Ebert

I purchased the 40th Anniversary CD and this is my third or forth viewing, ... Read More:

VHS : The Bells Go Down [1943]
I first watched this film many years ago,and enjoyed it very much, which is why I bought the video, but I had forgotten just how much the spectacular scenes of the burning buildings, and the dangers of fighting multiple fires during the Blitz could make you feel that you were there with them.James Mason,Finlay Currie, and Tommy Trinder take the main parts in the story, with sub-plots concerning the other characters, with Mervyn Johns, perfect as the local spiv and William Hartnell(Dr Who)sharing his knowledge with his colleagues of the bombing in the Spanish Civil War.It can be a bit wearing with the constant wisecracking of Tommy Trinder in the beginning, but as the film progresses he changes into the perfect fire fighter, much to James Mason(his team leader's approval)and ... What can i say about this film i first saw it as a child and loved it. I loved the music and still do. I bought it on Video as soon as i saw it and i think my copy is worn out. It has transferred well to DVD still as lush. Oh if only we had Teachers like Mr Thackery (Sidney Poitier). This film was classic 60's brings back memories of the dark terraced streets and peoples attitudes. If you haven't seen it buy it you will not be dissappointed.

VHS : Jailhouse Rock [1957]
I always believed that the early Elvis films were the best. He showed a raw edge and acting style which was similar to James Dean in those days. It is such a pity that his film career was ruined by making so many awful films in his later years, thanks to the idiotic manager of his Colonel Tom Parker who was more interested in his mega bucks than anything else.

Here, he plays a young singer Vince Edwards who is jailed for manslaughter after getting involved in a bar room brawl. During his months in prison, he learns a style of rock music from his mentor played by Mickey Shaughnessy. Upon his release, he meets by accident Peggy (Judy Tyler) who recognises his talent and sets him off onto the road to stardom. The rest, as they say, is history. Its a rather dated, but ...
