VHS : Doctor Who - The War Machines [1966]
I think I'm right in saying this is one of the first stories to be completely based on contemporary Earth and to benefit from the 'Yeti in the Loos at Tooting Bec' effect. It's atmospheric and very creepy to watch the War Machines trundle through the streets of London controlled by a super Computer in the then newly opened Post Office Tower. I suppose it was written to touch on the fears of where computerisation would lead and it does scare. It also is the story that introduces the sailor, Ben and the resourceful Polly who are both fun believable characters and an improvement on Dodo who feels very wooden. There are lighter bits, such as a policeman trying to go into the TARDIS thinking it's a real police box until he sees an out of order sign, ... Read More:

VHS : Mrs Dalloway [1998]
a really lovely film, the story captured my heart and moved me awfully. Woolf's creation is a genius that i doubt could be matched today and this film does it perfect justice. Redgrave is, as always, brilliant and brings a grown up yet youthful feel to the situation. A really lovely film about loosing love and finding it again.

175.Lancelot Du Lac [1974] starring: Luc Simon, Laura Duke Condominas, Humbert Balsan, Vladimir Antolek-Oresek, Patrick Bernhard

VHS : Lancelot Du Lac [1974]
What to make of this movie? Blood squirts and drips from severed heads and sliced groins like thick cherry juice. Lancelot says "J'taime' to Guinevere with all the passion of a piece of cheese. As in most of Bresson's films, the acting is expressionless, but here it is emotionless. "You are alone in your pride," says Guinevere to Lancelot, while she stares at him without a trace of feeling. "Pride in what is not yours is a falsehood." "I was to bring back the Grail," he tells her. "It was not the Grail," she says, "it was God you all wanted. God is no trophy to bring home. You were all implacable. You killed, pillaged, burned. Then you turned blindly on each other. Now you blame our love for this disaster...I do not ask to love you. Is it my fault I ... Read More:

VHS : A Matter Of Life And Death [1946]

This film has a fabulous opening sequence, and a lovely opening scene featuring David Niven as 'Peter Carter' and Kim Hunter as 'June'.

This is a fascinating movie with an interesting topic, and as so many have said before; this is a film way ahead of its time. The fact that this was filmed using both black and white and colour adds to the 'Special Effects'.

'Peter Carter' gets a second chance at life and love when he has to jump from a crashing Aeroplane during the War.

Marius Goring stars in one of his most 'colourful' roles as the 'Conductor 71' character. Also stars Raymond Massey.

An entertaining movie.

VHS : The Third Man [1949]
Everything about this movie works. If anyone wants to see how a movie should be directed and edited, or a screenplay written, or complex characters acted, or a film photographed, this is the one to flip in the DVD machine.

Holly Martins, a down-on-his-luck writer, shows up in post-war Vienna looking for his old friend, Harry Lime. But he's told Lime died in an accident, the military tell him to go home, and he's attracted to a mysterious woman he sees at Lime's grave. He sticks around, gets different stories about Lime, but finally understands Lime was an unscrupulous black marketeer, dealing in adulterated drugs among other things. And he realizes that Lime is alive.

Carol Reed was at the top of his form with this movie. His partnership ... Read More:

VHS : Carry On Cruising [1962]
Carry On Cruising (1962) saw the series transferred into colour but the one thing missing from this is the large number of regulars absent from it - theres no Charles Hawtrey, Joan Sims or Hattie Jaques. Yet surprisingly this does emerge as an enjoyable, entertaining entry in the long-running series. The action of course is set aboard a Mediterranean cruise liner (well actually it was all filmed at PineWood Studios) with the inept and typically incompentent crew under the strict command of the serious and uptight Captain Crowther, who is played marvelously by Sid James. Things all come to a climax when the crew plan a surprise party for the captain who is celebrating his tenth year at sea. This was Norman Hudis's last script for the series, which is certainly on top ... Read More:

VHS : Harper [1966]
The music, the cars, and the size of Pamela Tiffin's bikini (not to mention her hair) are the big giveaways that this is a Sixties flick - but one without the usual camera trickery of the era. Instead, director Jack Smight goes for a straighforward private eye approach, although the colour and California sunshine rule out the look of a latter day film noir. Paul Newman is the title character, a seedy and cynical private eye investigating the disappearance of a singularly unloved millionaire. That Harper is seedy is amply illustrated under the opening credits. His cynicism is repeatedly demonstrated in William Goldman's terse and cutting dialogue, which Newman clearly enjoys delivering. The plot frequently takes a back seat to the parade of offbeat characters portrayed ... Read More:
