I teach GCSE drama in a rough Saff London Comp and get the students hooked with Baz Lurhrmann's modern version of it and then to teach them more of what Shakespeare had in mind when he wrote the play, I show them this one by Zeffirelli - it works a treat. It is beautifully done, universal in its themes and appeal and the acting is rivitingly good - especially the very young and beautiful Olivia Hussy, though Michael York as a petulant Tybalt is equally good.

VHS : Rebecca [1940]
This fine movie is worth watching just for Laurence Olivier at his sophisticated sexiest. He exudes British qualities of confidance, pragmatism and eccentricity. The enigma surrounding his dark moods unfolds as the story continues. There is however, a lot more than him that is good in this film.

Beautiful, doe eyed Joan Fontaine is well cast as his un-named second wife. The character is overwhelmed and out of place as the lady of a great house. Director Alfred Hitchcock told Joan that the rest of the cast hated her, to get that awkward feeling from her acting. This was hardly true, although Laurence had wanted his wife Vivien Leigh for the role.

Hitchcock shows his skill and mastery of suspense here. This is an ... Read More:

THE OLD MAID: THE CLASH OF THE TITANS...

This classic film is a superlative soaper in which two cousins, Charlotte (Bette Davis) and Delia (Miriam Hopkins) have the misfortune to love the same man, Clem (George Brent), with lifetime repercussions for both.

The film begins around the time of the Civil War. Clem returns home, only to find that the woman he loves, Delia, is getting married that same day. She is marrying a rich banker and, though she loves Clem, a ne'er do well, she wants security, so she goes through with the marriage. Seeing and seizing an opportunity, Charlotte declares herself to Clem, telling him how she has always loved him, as he goes off to fight in the war.

Duting the war, Charlotte manages to hook ... Read More:

I worked on this trial as a member of the judicial staff in Oregon, so have personal experience of Diane Downs, the witnesses, prosecutor and defense counsel. Like everyone else, I was very dubious when I heard that a film was scheduled for production. I was very surprised that when the film was released, it was a very accurate reflection of what I witnessed in the six-week trial. In fact, the film of the trial was less dramatic than the trial itself, especially when daughter Christie testified, which remains the most dramatic moment I have ever witnessed. Farrah Fawcett did a superb job, although to this day I don't know why she adopted a southern accent, when Diane doesn't speak this way. If you have read Ann Rule's book of the same name, you won't be ... Read More:

36.Cool Hand Luke [1967] starring: Paul Newman, George Kennedy, J.D. Cannon, Lou Antonio, Robert Drivas

VHS : Cool Hand Luke [1967]
The anti-establishment attitude of the Sixties is personified in the lead character of Stuart Rosenberg's "Cool Hand Luke." While Paul Newman is indeed "cool" in every sense of the word in the title role, the film unfortunately fails to recreate that same restless energy and urgency of "Rebel Without A Cause" (1955) - the spiritual predecessor of "Cool Hand Luke" from the decade prior.

Luke Jackson (Newman) is caught vandalizing parking meters early one morning. As punishment for his deed, he is sentenced to a prison farm chain gang for two years. Unsurprisingly, Luke refuses to conform to the norms imposed on him by both the guards and the other prisoners. His defiance turns him into a folk hero among his fellow inmates but the prison staff is less ... Read More:

VHS : Pride And Prejudice [1940]
I hadn't seen this film since I was a child, and didn't have the highest expectations having heard throughly mixed comments surrounding it. I can honestly say that it was an absolutely lovely surprise. No, it isn't completely faithful to the novel, but neither is any other adaptation (not even the much loved 1995 version- I don't remember any scene in the novel where Darcy takes a bath or a dip in the lake), and it's true that the costumes are far more Civil War than English Regency, but this is one of the rare examples in which it doesn't really matter because it's just so charmingly done.

Greer Garson is simply magnificent as Elizabeth Bennet- poised, intelligent, gracious and witty and is excellently matched by Laurence Olivier's Darcy. These two prove ... Read More:

VHS : Whisky Galore [1949]
A great film that perfectly depicts the way of life even today in the Hebrides.A cargo of whisky sinking into the sea,but not before the locals get their share first.
A classic scene is Duncan MacRae swallowing all the evidence before the exciseman enters his house.
Brilliant scenery, great acting and a brilliant music score.
On a lighter note, get a few friends round, watch the film together, and every time the cast have a dram you have one with them.
By the end of the film you think you're in Todday with them!!!
