VHS : The Guns Of Navarone [1961]
This is a superb war film. Based around the (fictional) efforts of a group of disparate SAS type specialists to destroy two huge guns blocking Allied martime accesss across the Aegean Sea, it has bags of tension, atmosphere and great characterisation. The team is comprised of Mallory (Gregory Peck), a mountaineer and reluctant "volunteer" for this task; Miller (David Niven), an English gentleman and thoroughly cynical explosives expert; Andrea Stavrou (Antony Quinn) a Cretan "man of honour" who has vowed to kill Mallory once the job is over to assuage his code of honour and avenge his family's death (which he blames on a previous miltary blunder by Mallory); Stanley Baker plays a knife expert who has lost his nerve; Irene Papas a proud Greek ... VHS : Julius Caesar [1953]
I have been raised on this play and saw many versions. I have had the real story pointed out to me and meaning behind many of the words explained. However it is this adaptation that brought it to life not just intellectually but emotionally.

One of the first things you notice is the setting is a balance between stage and reality. This film being in black and white may have contributed to the atmosphere.

The actors are not just popular names but are able to bring the characters to life. I was impressed with everyone's ability to the point that it took time to realize that Mark Antony is Marlon Brando; he among others is able to make the words real and meaningful, not just a bunch of Shakespearian phrases.

If somehow ... Read More:

The Goon's are a national institution! They, and especially Spike Milligan, were the god fathers of modern comedy and this gives a rare glimpse into how the Goons actually did those mad stories. My advice to any one who want's to buy the Last Goon Show of All is buy the CD. On the CD, you get the entire show, uncut and a bonus documentry. On this video you get a brilliantly funny story marking the end of one the greatest comedy partnerships of all time, cut to shreads for the sake of fitting it onto a tape! It's not as if the cut's are partiulally good ones either! They miss out virtually an entire scene from the start when Ghrythpipe Fin are Moriarty are talking about there life on the Westminster rubbish dump and consequently you miss most of the jokes ... VHS : Far From The Madding Crowd [1967]
One of Thomas Hardy's best-loved novels is sensitively and accurately dramatised in this 1967 classic.

Upon inheriting her uncle's farm, the beautiful and assertive Bathsheba Everdene (Julie Christie) is the most sought after maiden in the whole of Weatherbury. She's forced to choose between the affections of three very different men; local shepherd Gabriel Oak, gentleman farmer Mr. Boldwood and the womanising Sargeant Frank Troy. Here, Hardy's classic tale of love, betrayal and tragedy is faithfully dramatised. Personally though, I think the 1998 Paloma Baeza version is even better!

A classic Bette Davis, but the quality of the print was very disappointing.

VHS : Thoroughly Modern Millie [1967]
I had last seen this film as a young girl, and after watching an am dram production in winchester recentley decided to give it another go. I'm amazed at how "modern" and relevant this film is. Milie is smart and surprisingly clued up for a girl new to the city. White slavery is a weird concept for a musical but it works brilliantly and gives it an edge to go along with the fast paced plot line and toe tapping songs, A perfect film to buy your mum for mothers day and watch it together.

VHS : Dunkirk [1958]
Brilliant! Historic film from WW2 showing true British 'grit' and shows the true meaning of the 'Dunkirk Spirit'. Keeps to events and Sir John Mills gives a very good performance.

VHS : Doctor Who The Android Invasion [1963]
This is a better than usual Tom Baker story, with fun and atmosphere early on and passable androids and aliens. The rocket is a bad jok, same stock footage as Genesis of the Daleks/revenge of the Cybermen again! Considering it hails from the overrated Gothic horror period, which had as many totally boring stories as cool exciting ones, this then is not bad at all. The ending falls rather flat and looks awful (that freeze frame is yuck!) but I have a soft spot for this one. I liked UNIT, sadly this is its last breath. Criminal! And fat comedy guy who stands in for the Brigadier is an insult to the show's past! But, for the eerie village scenes, this is worth a look!

VHS : Cat People [1942]
Says psychiatrist Dr. Louis Judd, author of The Anatomy of Atavism, to Irena Reed, his reluctant patient. He is describing the things they have just talked about. "...and the cat women of your village, too. You told me of them, women who in jealousy or anger or out of their own corrupt passions can change into great cats, like panthers. And if one of these women were to fall in love, and her lover was to kiss her and to take her into his embrace, she would be driven by her own evil to kill him."

For me, this overripe bit of psychiatry from the suave, moth-eaten Tom Conway as Judd is about as good as Cat People gets. The film is a Poverty Row B movie which was made on a shoestring in 1942, when theaters played two-movie bills with cartoons, short subjects, a news ... Read More:

70.Hombre [1966] starring: Paul Newman, Fredric March, Richard Boone, Diane Cilento, Cameron Mitchell

VHS : Hombre [1966]
I saw this film first in 1967, and many, many times since, and westerns just don't get better than this. Paul Newman is at his very best, Richard Boone is at his very nastiest (and best), the humour is, like Cool Hand Luke, subtle and funny. If all that is not enough, there is a real story behind it, and the good guy doesn't win. Just like life
What a shame we cannot get it in PAL format
