Ralph Bates played to perfection John Lacey, a language teacher and harrassed and bewildered divorcee who was forever trying to work out where his marriage had gone wrong, why his wife had left him for his best mate and why the judge had seen fit to award her the house, the car and, well, just about everything! John would seek refuge once a week down at the local 1-2-1 lonely-hearts club, a meeting place for divorcees wanting advice, a cuppa and a chat. This was at times a bittersweet and emotional comedy but at the same time it was absolutely hilarious! The real strength of the show were the supporting characters. i thought this movie was really good, a bit unrealistic though as her father wouldnt have been in the u.s peace corps as he was english. it is defintly worth a watch.

I bought this movie after I first saw 'Hairspray' (the 1987 original) and thought that Divine was hilarious. However, I did not quite know what to make of this movie, or just what I was letting myself in for - it's SO disgusting and obscene... Not only that; but the story did not make any sense to me either (perhaps it was not meant to) The strange thing is, some years later, I read a review of the film on another Site by someone who pointed out that this movie makes a really good statement about modern society and its obsession in becoming famous; it is a great representation of what people will do to become famous today, and the lengths they will go to! What a fantastic and must-see video this really is. Lily Savage shines and dazzles on stage cracking jokes about everything from the english Royal family to Coronation Street, watching this vid really makes me wish that Paul would bring back Lily again, even for just a few shows. She really was the best in vuglar, modern comedy. This live performance is a must!
