VHS : High Spirits [1988]
Peter O'Toole is hysterical in this film, and quite easily, is the glue that holds it together (contrary to popular opinion). While this film suffers its share of problems, (such as a few holes in the plot, a little shoddy acting here and there) it makes me laugh as few other movies have. O'Toole's drunken wisdom and fights with his drunken, ghost-talking mother are great. Steve Guttenberg does fine, Daryl Hannah is okay. The Irish country side is lovelyand haunting (incidentally, the movie was filmed in a castle in Limerick,Ireland, where Frank McCourt, author of Angela's Ashes grew up); the set ofthe castle itself is the stuff that fairy tales are made of. The effort that the staff makes to haunt the cynical guests is great, in particular the Lady ... Read More:

VHS : Marx Brothers - A Night In Casablanca [1946]
This was made in 1946 and its the penultimate Marx brothers film as far as I know. Whilst it doesn't stand up to comparison to some of their earlier classics, its still funny and in places a clever film.

Groucho, who was 56 when this was made, plays Ronald Kornblow a replacement manager for the recently murdered previous manager. Actually the plot really doesn't matter very much. What you need to know is that Groucho gets to deliver some classic one-liners:

Ronald Kornblow: You know, I think you're the most beautiful woman in the whole world.
Beatrice Rheiner: [eagerly] Do you really?
Ronald Kornblow: No, but I don't mind lying if it'll get me somewheres.

and perhaps my favourite

VHS : Steve Coogan - Live 'N' Lewd [1994]
This live video is a showcase for many of Steve Coogan's more underrated characters. The hilariously funny characters that are Alan Partridge and Tony Ferrino do not appear on this video. But, do not let this put you off from buying it, as you will be treated to some trully unforgetable characters.

You will meet Ernest Moss - The Chief Assistant to the Fire, Health and Safety Executive for the North West Region. Ernest, who first appeared in Coogan's Run, will give you a memorable lecture on, you guessed it, fire and Safety and I guarantee, it is the funniest lecture you will ever have the priviledge to see!

You will also meet up and coming comedian Duncan Thickett, who has an attack of the nerves as he gets on stage. Watch in joy on how ... Read More:

VHS : O Brother, Where Art Thou? [2000]
I've seen this movie several times now and I'm still fascinated by it - I'm no particular fan of George Clooney or the Coen brothers or Bluegrass music (or even of Homer), but this movie is so cleverly constructed and well acted, with multiple threads that hang and re-cross throughout the story, that each time I watch I see a connection I missed in previous viewings. Reading the other reviews I guess I must be the only ageing Blues fan out here - but Robert Johnson must be up there (sorry, down there) somewhere, smiling if he's seen it.

...and any other for that matter!

If you wanna watch comedic genius at it's earliest best, in a thoroughly charming and hysterically funny British comedy film, then please put this close to the top of your list!

All the leads give outstanding accounts of themselves ...but it's Mr Sellers' sublime talent that shines the brightest! Quite simply a gem! 10/10

VHS : Dear John - Complete Collection [1986]
A cult '80s classic! Ralph Bates played to perfection John Lacey, a language teacher and harrassed and bewildered divorcee who was forever trying to work out where his marriage had gone wrong, why his wife had left him for his best mate and why the judge had seen fit to award her the house, the car and, well, just about everything! John would seek refuge once a week down at the local 1-2-1 lonely-hearts club, a meeting place for divorcees wanting advice, a cuppa and a chat. This was at times a bittersweet and emotional comedy but at the same time it was absolutely hilarious! The real strength of the show were the supporting characters. These included man-mad leader of the group Louise, supremely confident medallion-man (and self-procclaimed super-spy!) Kirk, gawky Ralph (with ... Read More:
