VHS : Roots - Original Series - Volume 1 - Episodes 1-4
I remember when this was first shown on TV and was living in London and it caused a lot of trouble. Not very accurate. Slavery was abolished about 100 years before the source of the Nile was discovered (Dr Livingston I Presume etc). However these people were running around in Africa with chains. The reality was that the slave ships bought the slaves from Arab (Can't remember seeing any in this series)Slave Traders(Who did know their way around Africa) who had traded for them from the tribes they came from. And they met the ships on the coast. Slavery was about MONEY not RACE. People who get rich by the exploitation of other human beings do not care what colour they are - all they care about is how much MONEY they are making out of them.

VHS : Poison Ivy [1992]
Firstly, I do think this is a worthwhile watch, it has depth and chills and its one of the few films that still makes my hairs stand on end.

However, in response to a previous comment about the rating, I'm not sure what version she was watching but this film is an 18 with good reason for at least a couple of sex scenes between a teenage Barrymore and older man Skerrit, I watched it at about 13 and it was more than I'd seen elsewhere so I'd say the label is deserved. Wouldn't be happy watching this with my 12 yr old daughter...

VHS : Martin Chuzzlewit [1994]
I had, until i saw this production of Martin Chuzzlewit by the BBC, never read the book. Being a devout reader of Charles Dickens novels, i don't know how this one escaped me. However, after viewing this superb, outstanding production,i was resolved to read the book. I did! All i can say is that the cast of characters in the production so closely resembled the ones in the book,it was as though Charles Dickens himself was present, overseeing and directing the operation. The characters stepped out of the book before the camera! Remakable! A masterpiece indeed and a triumph for the BBC!

VHS : Little Dorrit - Part 2 - Dorrit's Story (1990)
I have attended two films - and only two - where at the conclusion of the film the audience stood up and applauded. One was 'Lawrence of Arabia', the other was both parts of this interpretation of 'Little Dorrit'.
I appeal to those who can make it happen to release this magnificent film on DVD.
Little Dorrit is, in my opinion, not only The greatest novel that Dickens wrote (having a slight edge over Bleak house, Great Expectations, and Our Mutual Friend) but the greatest novel in the English language. It is assuredly a worthy competitor to the works of Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy and Flaubert.
It seems to me that although the film takes 'liberties' with the text and has major omissions the spirit of the book prevails. The idea of 'splitting' the film into ... Read More:

VHS : Poirot - Agatha Christie's Poirot - The Cornish Mystery / The Disappearance Of Mr Davenheim [1989]
These are my two favourite Poirot episodes that keep very similar to the original stories.

TheCornish Mystery- Poirot and Hastings travel to cornwall to investigate a suspected case of poisning. When they arrive, they find everyone who is linked to the case doesn't want to say anything, Poirot is on the case...

The dissapearance of Mr Davenheim- How can it be possible for a man to walk down a village lane and never be seen again? Inspector Japp challenges Poirot to solve the mystery without leaving his appartment.

This series is superbly made and very well acted.

VHS : The Taming Of The Shrew [1967]
I'm studying this play and bought this Franco Zafirrelli / Elizabeth Burton version as it was dirt cheap on amazon. I found it more enjoyable than the BBC version (as did my wife), even though we both preferred John Cleese's to Richard Burton's Petruchio. It gains over the BBC version by not having that awkward out of place hymn at the end (and after Shakespeare note-worthily eschewed religious arguments in Kate's final speech)! Also, the dialogue is here more clearly and comprehensibly spoken; it is just a shame it misses out the majority of it! There are a lot of visual gags to retain the interest of those who do not follow the language used. Unfortunately it also misses some of the plot points for the minor characters along the way, although it does portray the main relationship ... Read More:

VHS : The Land Girls [1998]
I guess that Land Girls is there to give us a 'glimpse of life in the country during World War II'. Not much material there for a feature film you might think, at least not without the obligatory sex or violence and in this case you'd be right. As most of the violence was happening in Europe, that leaves the former, and thankfully we are spared any gratuitous action in this department. How many of you thought that this sort of thing didn't go on during the war?

Even so, the emphasis is more on the romantic element which hinges on the girls' relationships with Joe the farm boy and the ways in which their lives are shaped by them (well, sort of). Poor Joe looks constantly miserable in spite of his cavortings - joining the RAF is more important to him than a roll in the hay ... Read More:

VHS : Stand By Me [1987]
This is an all time classic, one of THE greatest movies that will ever be made. It sits third on my Top 5 list, falling only behind Casino and Goodfellas.

There are lot's of reviews for this movie already, so I will keep mine brief.

Buy this film, watch it and fall in love with it like everyone else. It is quite simply a masterpiece that will pull every one of your emotions out of you. This movie shows River Phoenix at his greatest, and untouchable piece of acting that goes far beyond the limits of his script.

If ever a movie deserved 5 stars, this is it.
