VHS : Much Ado About Nothing [1993]
Flicking through my recommendations on Amazon today I came across this. Well I bought it when it first came out on DVD so thought I would add my voice to those other reviews about the quality. I won't say to much about the film. For me it was very, very enjoyable. Well acted (a pleasure to see so many British stars mixed with those from across the pond), well directed (the scene where Beatrice and Benedict are 'captured' by the trap is superb), with good music and wonderful scenery.

Such a shame then that the DVD is so sloppily put together. In Mono only! No scene selection. No 'making of'. No directors' comments. Surely the time has come for a new edition?

I have most of Kenneth Branagh's work and enjoyed ... Read More:

I thoroughly enjoyed this production - it is closer to Hardy's novel than the earlier version starring Julie Christie. Baeza's reading of Bathsheba Everdine is excellent, totally in character. She skillfully combines Bathsheba's independent spirit with both her youth and naivety. She is at all times consistent and convincing. In the Julie Christie version, Christie overplayed the role, moving away from Hardy's intention, and came close at times to trivialising the character. Also, she did not consistently capture the youthfulness and innocence of Bathsheba. The Everdine/Troy sword scene was also overplayed in the Christie version, including sequences that were not in the novel and which, quite honestly, reduced the emotional impact of this (very ... VHS : Lola [1981]
Typical of the director's later works, Lola is a giddy fusion of the filmmaker's key cinematic inspirations and his then political concerns. It was a style and personal ideology that Fassbinder had been building up to with films like In a Year with 13 Moons and Despair, showing the director's continuing attempts to subvert the conventions of the melodrama by way of narrative experimentation & visual stylisation... a cinematic device that would be further tinkered with in his final films, the bitter Veronika Voss and the deeply surreal Querelle. Whereas his early films, such as Fear Eats the Soul and The Merchant of Four Seasons, had developed an astute sense of character, dislocated from a reality that was, in someway, categorically our own, these later ... Monarch of the Glen had me gripped from the very first episode! It is a wonderful family comedy and I often laugh out loud at various comments, partcularly from Hector. His facial expressions are hilarious, especially the way he is a bit "slow" on the uptake.
Your heart goes out to Archie as he struggles to make Glenbogle pay its way and even more so when he cannot decide between Katrina, Lexie and various other love interests.
I highly recommend all of the Monarch of the Glen videos to anyone who is looking for a good laugh!

The Main menu audio volume on this DVD is too high - causing lots of "clipping" - but the quality of the video and audio in the film itself is perfect. The DVD-5 (single layer) disc uses anamorphic 16:9 to display the 1.85:1 original theatrical ratio and audio is Dolby 2.0 stereo. There is less than 10 minutes of extra features - so there's not likely to have been much gained anyway if it were a dual layer disc.

The English subtitles are fixed (not an optional feature) - but non-French speaking viewers will welcome the fact that they are very easy to read.

Ma Vie En Rose is one of my favourite films. Everything about it is first class - but especially its huge beautiful heart. I saw the film in cinematic release here in Brisbane first ... Read More:

Have to agree with the other reviewer. This film is unpretentious, easy going and not too complicated for the hard of head (a moi). Even though you get the feeling it's missing a bit of a middle, it doesn't really seem to matter (unlike something like MIB which was rendered terrible because of this). I can unashamedly say I love feelgood films that can produce a tear .. and this is one .. Well done .. mr Director.
