VHS : Dr Syn [1937]
When the customs and excise men of King George III are dispatched to Dymchurch in Kent to investigate the local smuggling, they uncover an intricate network coordinated by the local vicar, Dr Syn. As the plot thickens, Dr Syns secret pirating past is also uncovered. This is George Arliss' final movie, and whilst not quite his best (how could he ever top Disraeli?) it still remains a highly enjoyable yarn with more plot crammed into 80 minutes than most films these days twice its length. Arliss is supported admirably by a variety of colourful characters including a very young Margaret Lockwood, as Imogene, a local girl who unknowingly holds the key to Dr Syns true past identity. This movie is a little un-PC in places however is nonetheless ... Read More:

VHS : Dirty Dancing (1987)
Dirty Dancing is a movie that is hyped up to the limit. It is recognised as one of the best chick-flicks and has somehow entered the books as a classic that you simply have to see. With all this in mind I only got around to watching this movie a year ago and have since watched this three times, each time hoping to discover what it is that seems to make this movie special and unique but I am sorry to say that I fail to see what's so great about this movie.

The story is simple. Baby (Jennifer Grey) is on holidays with her parents. She meets local dance teacher Johnny (Patrick Swayze), she learns the passions of dance while also learning a few things about love and life at the same time.

Undoubtedly the best thing about ... Read More:

VHS : White Balloon [1995]
Set in Tehran this simple and enchanting film is testament to the power of cinema. There is no need for special effects, fancy editing, big stars or even complicated storylines. This movie completely engrosses you as it transports you to a child's perspective and you become as heart set on buying that goldfish as the little girl in the film is.
It will take you back to when you were a child and really little things meant a great deal. Not to mention the frustration children feel when adults are too busy to listen to them or care about their troubles.
The non professional cast are utterly believable to the point where it feels like a documentary, coupled with the fact it is shot in real time.

Fans of neo-realist Italian classics such ... Read More:

VHS : Enchanted April [1991]
Not particularly for Lethal Weapon fans but a lovely gentle unfolding of a gentle story. It begins in a damp depressing London and end up in beautiful Italy. People, as well as the scenery are transformed and the memorable performances of Polly Walker and Miranda Richardson make for a memorable cinamatic experience. Buy the movie, you'll want to watch it more than once (or twice!).

VHS : Richard III [1996]
This is probably about ten percent of the original dialogue, and therefore it rolls along at a terrific pace. Having Richard arrive in a tank through a wall, must be the most dynamic entrance of any character in a Shakespeare play. You can suddenly see the origins of the pantomime Wicked Uncle figure in this piece as well, when he croons over the departing Little Princes 'So wise so young they say do never live long, come-let's to supper.' Fabulous! Don't miss it.

The heading here was the tag line for the film. Jack Nicholson was the perfect actor to play this part. I don't think I can say anything that other reviewers haven't already said.

My advice is just watch it. Can't say much more than that.

VHS : Message In A Bottle [1999]
Well for those not reading novels and watching Sci-fi, action, thriller movies this might be a change and they might like it but for me it was total nonsense. I am about 23 and been reading and watching novels (from 'Great Expectations' to 'Dr Zhirago', From 'Love Story' to 'A Walk to Remember' and 'Legend of the Fall' all are some of the best novels and some filmed too) for about 15 years and this movie and its content was the most rubbish i can imagine. Total waste of time and money. Even the climax of the movie had no attraction what so ever. I've seen many movies and read many novels where the main character/characters dies/die but here the way he died for no reason and in an unrealistic man-made satuation, I can not believe i bought this movie and look at its name, from its name ... VHS : The Quiet Man [1952]
This St. Patrick’s Day my wife and I decided to build a fire and enjoy this Irish classic. The music, the scenery, the story line and the dialogue ensure its enduring status.

A real test of a work of art is whether the viewer keeps finding something new in it time after time. “The Quiet Man “ meets this test. This time I was impressed by the cultural tension between the Americanism of Sean Thornton (John Wayne) and the Irishness of the other characters, something which I had not picked up on so keenly in past viewings.

Whether you are ready for your first or fiftieth viewing, “The Quiet Man” will always be a treat.
