VHS : Dirty Dancing (1987)
Dirty Dancing is a movie that is hyped up to the limit. It is recognised as one of the best chick-flicks and has somehow entered the books as a classic that you simply have to see. With all this in mind I only got around to watching this movie a year ago and have since watched this three times, each time hoping to discover what it is that seems to make this movie special and unique but I am sorry to say that I fail to see what's so great about this movie.

The story is simple. Baby (Jennifer Grey) is on holidays with her parents. She meets local dance teacher Johnny (Patrick Swayze), she learns the passions of dance while also learning a few things about love and life at the same time.

Undoubtedly the best thing about ... Read More:

What a charming film with the late great Bob Peck. I knew nothing about this film, even though it was shot near where I come from in Keighley, until I read about it in MADE IN YORKSHIRE. It is also based on true events which happened in Yorkshire.

I had thought it must be dire otherwise I would have heard about. How wrong I was. Was it shown in the cinema ? I have a job tracking it down but found a copy in the Keighley lending library.

Check it out as its well worth watching.

I don't know how I missed this when it came on TV back in 1998 ... but I'm sure glad I found it now.
This is an extremely good adaptation of a very readable Dickens novel - if you haven't read the novel, I'd recommend it. This adaptation cleverly keeps 90% of the original story while leaving out a couple of minor characters that add interest to the novel but are not necessary. The casting, locations, storyline, everything are spot on and it is a cracking story.
If you are a fan of costume drama, you really don't want to miss this one.
Oh, and have a go at the book, too - but give yourself a lot of time, it's MASSIVE!

This has a slow start and moves very slowly and gently through a gentle sweet story about the relationship of a japanese daughter and her father. Surprisingly modern in some aspects.

VHS : The Devils [1971]
This film deserves so much more credit for what it achieves from Huxley's original. While some of the performances are a little shakey, this film represents one of the great Oliver Reed's finest moments - he exudes power and sexuality as Grandier, and the film achieves some particularly powerful/disturbing moments in the depiction of the ergot-addled nunnery.

HOWEVER...

This film has truly been victimised by the censors and there is Still no DVD version available - surely with the garbage which the censors let through these days this film can be restored and re-released?

A lovely film. Michael Caine does a wonderful job playing the self-destructive but intelligent and warmhearted Dr Frank Bryant, and Julie Walters immerses herself in the character of Rita, a lively and witty hairdresser who decides to enroll in an open University course. The script is perfect, making for a touching film full of insights into human relationships, hopes and desires.

As an aside, for anyone familiar with Dublin, the film was shot in the city, mostly in Trinity College, which is fun to see as it was in the 80s, and works as a perfect setting for the film.

Very good, I was especially pleased with this movie, it moved me, because of all the abuse we see in the world today, especially by men onto women I felt very pleased to see a woman overcome the situation she was in and not be held responsible for trying to survive .
