VHS : A Streetcar Named Desire [1951]
As a playwright, Tennessee Williams was to the South what William Faulkner was as a fiction writer: a creative genius who revolutionized not only the region's arts scene and literature but that of 20th century America as a whole, bringing a Southern voice to the forefront while addressing universally important themes, and influencing and inspiring generations of later writers.

Pulitzer-Prize-winning "A Streetcar Named Desire" dates from the peak of Williams's creativity, the period between 1944 ("A Glass Menagerie") and 1955 ("Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," his second Pulitzer-winner). After its successful 1947 run on Broadway, "Streetcar" was adapted into a screenplay by Williams himself for this movie produced and directed by Elia Kazan, ... Read More:

VHS : The Shell Seekers [1990]
With a strong cast, this tale unfolds from a gentle depiction of a middle class family to a poignant study of 'hidden' family values. The drama unfolds following the discovery of the true worth of a painting and sketches by their deceased father and hidden feelings start to emerge.

Angela Lansbury in particular is superb, with the film being a visual treat and a classy tribute to Rosamund Pilcher.

I remember when this was first shown on TV and was living in London and it caused a lot of trouble. Not very accurate. Slavery was abolished about 100 years before the source of the Nile was discovered (Dr Livingston I Presume etc). However these people were running around in Africa with chains. The reality was that the slave ships bought the slaves from Arab (Can't remember seeing any in this series)Slave Traders(Who did know their way around Africa) who had traded for them from the tribes they came from. And they met the ships on the coast. Slavery was about MONEY not RACE. People who get rich by the exploitation of other human beings do not care what colour they are - all they care about is how much MONEY they are making out of them.

VHS : Eldorado - Adios Eldorado [1993]
Adios Eldorado was a video released in 1993 to look back on the short life of troubled BBC soap Eldorado which was set in the beautiful fictional town of Los Barcos in Spain. In just one short year, the much talked about soap clocked up 156 episodes and this video is a 2 hour compilation of the soap's best bits. It looks back on great moments in the sunny soap including Drew's splash in the pool, Marcus and Pilar's relationship, Javier's death and the attack on Joy Slater. For most people Eldorado had many bad points but this video does prove that there was more to the Spanish soap than what the papers said and it was'nt just a 10 million quid tax loss. Until I watched it I too thought Eldorado was a disaster but the video made me realise that this soap had a lot ... Read More:

Eastenders is the nations favourite soap opera.
This VHS brings you inside the world of Walford.
It fetaures many classic moments such as Grant hearing the tape from Phil and Sharon, Phil torching the vic and of cource Den handing Angie divorce papers for a Christmas present!
Eatenders has not been very good in recent years (except for Dens return and Alfie Moon) so buy this and be reminded of the glory years.

VHS : Eyes Wide Shut [1999]
I own both versions of eyes wide shut and prefer the us version with the weird cloaked people blocking the eurosoftcore scenes which to me play silly. It gives it a more dreamlike nightmare atmosphere. Anyways , this would be a 5 star film but I don't think Kubrick actually finished it. It plays like a rough cut, it has very unkubrickian (is that a word) scenes. EX: Kubrick would never have had the static mask reveal at the end before the Cruise Entrance and swish pan on the mask. I also believe the film would have been tighter, even for Mr. Barry Lyndon (which is my favorite film of all time). Just disappointed that both versions aren't on the dvd. The Shining super edition should also include both the long US version and the under 2 hour european version.

I loved the gripping climax of the series, Well done BBC for yet another quality costume drama adapted from the novel by Susan Howatch.

VHS : Ryan's Daughter (1970)
I caught this classic recently on TV. It is a strange storm -tossed dream of a movie from 1970; a tale of a troubled romance featuring Robert Mitchum and Sarah Miles. David Lean's visionary leanings run off the hook with symbolic weather and flora, Mitchum's solid, lonely turn is all there is to hang onto.

I can only write about this film in superlatives. Foremost the photography - another excellent work by Freddie Young - honoured with an Academy Award, and the acting by John Mills, who won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his outstanding performance as the dumb fisherman. But I would have awarded Sarah Miles (she was nominated for the Best Actress Oscar). Robert Mitchum has never been better, he fills the widow village teacher's character with life. ... Read More:
