VHS : Don't Look Now [1973]
Hitchcock used an example to explain the difference between surprise and suspense. If people are seated at a table and a bomb explodes, that is surprise. If they are seated at a table, and you know there's a bomb under the table attached to a ticking clock, but they continue to play cards -- that's suspense. There's a bomb under "Dont Look Now" for excruciating stretches of time.

I was expecting this slow-moving movie to descend into routine shock and horror movie, but it doesn't. Most of the movie is all waiting, anticipating and dreading. The jolts that come about midway are of a similar magnitude to movies such as Sixth Sense or The Exorcist.

The film is slow moving, but it manages to expertly linger ... Read More:

I think I'm right in saying this is one of the first stories to be completely based on contemporary Earth and to benefit from the 'Yeti in the Loos at Tooting Bec' effect. It's atmospheric and very creepy to watch the War Machines trundle through the streets of London controlled by a super Computer in the then newly opened Post Office Tower. I suppose it was written to touch on the fears of where computerisation would lead and it does scare. It also is the story that introduces the sailor, Ben and the resourceful Polly who are both fun believable characters and an improvement on Dodo who feels very wooden. There are lighter bits, such as a policeman trying to go into the TARDIS thinking it's a real police box until he sees an out of order sign, and ... Read More:

VHS : The Lost Boys [1987]
After quite a few disappointing movie rentals, and being none too impressed by the more recent monster/action films to grace our screens, I decided to try out a classic.

My interest was initially perked up by the fact Kiefer Sutherland was in it. Being a bit of a fan, and liking the premise of the film, I decided to buy the double boxset of the film (it works out cheaper - even if the 2nd one is a bit naff in comparison) and I must say it's one of the best films I have seen in ages!

The story goes thus. Michael and Sam move with their mum to Santa Carla, California, after what seems like a slightly messy divorce. They settle in quickly, Sam befriending two (if not slightly odd) comic book store teens, and Michael befriending ... Read More:

VHS : Angel - Season 2 (Box Set 2) [2000]
Of all the box sets forming this wonderful series, this has to be considered the best. We see the sheer grit of dark angel, the tension relieving moments with his former employees, and a trully fantastic season closing arc.
The Angel we see here is no longer the dark avenger he started as. We're now dealing with a different beast with a score to settle, and there are pretty much no boundaries left for him to cross. He even goes as far to put his soul on the line in 'epiphany', which does exactly what it says on the tin.
As for the other characters, Wesley's transformation away from geek to a man of (somewhat) authority. Gunn becomes a little more bearable, and Cordy continues to grow as a person. Which is a shame.
The producers also introduce ... Read More:

VHS : The Third Man [1949]
Everything about this movie works. If anyone wants to see how a movie should be directed and edited, or a screenplay written, or complex characters acted, or a film photographed, this is the one to flip in the DVD machine.

Holly Martins, a down-on-his-luck writer, shows up in post-war Vienna looking for his old friend, Harry Lime. But he's told Lime died in an accident, the military tell him to go home, and he's attracted to a mysterious woman he sees at Lime's grave. He sticks around, gets different stories about Lime, but finally understands Lime was an unscrupulous black marketeer, dealing in adulterated drugs among other things. And he realizes that Lime is alive.

Carol Reed was at the top of his form with this movie. His partnership ... Read More:

VHS : The Body Snatcher [1945]
For a low-budget, B movie horror quickie, The Body Snatcher holds up remarkably well as a tightly-told, well-acted story. The horror is in the situation, not the actors' make-up or the staggering around of corpses. Corpses there are, but they're freshly dug up, and their purpose is not to grasp and choke, but to be dissected by a complex and morally ambiguous surgeon.

Dr. Wolfe MacFarlane (Henry Daniell) is a brilliant surgeon and teacher in 1831 Edinburgh. He is on the verge of medical breakthroughs involving the spine and the spinal cord. For his work, he needs fresh corpses to dissect for his research. John Gray (Boris Karloff), a cabman, provides those corpses for a price. Gray digs up the freshly interred and delivers them to MacFarlane's laboratory ... Read More:

VHS : Bodywork [1999]
This film is too short. It's a bare-bones of a movie that places technique above content.
We are given no time to get to know the characters, they're given no room to breathe, to become real. The film jumps from scene to scene, seemingly afraid to linger and let us identify with any of the characters.
Plot is everything here, though a good plot nonetheless. The diagogue tries too hard with a preponderence of smart-assed one-liners.
There are a lot of good moments in the film, but they are too often incidental to the characters or the storyline. Simply good ideas plonked into the film, that would have worked anywhere.
It is a great cast really well performed throughout.
There's a great movie hidden in there somewhere, it's a pity the makers didn't have ... Read More:
