Once again Anchor Bay have released a rare film and have pulled out all the stops. The print is excellent with no print damage and is presented in the original 1.66 aspect ratio. There is also a very intersting audio commentary track with the director John Hough and executive producer Bryan Forbes.

This is a British film set on the island of Malta and the basic plot concerns a young boy (who has the habit of crying wolf rather alot) who witnesses an assasination by a couple of policemen. Of course no one believes him. Only the killers know he saw them and now need to silence him forever....

This film reminds me of a cross between a Italian Giallo film and an Alfred Hitchcock film because of the suspence and fairly graphic ... Read More:

What an utter surprise. I expected a dated sci fi flick that had not stood the test of time but I was wrong. This is an exceedingly moving and thought provoking film. It is also the first film in a long time that moved me to tears (anyone who has watched it will know which part I am referring to). It is utterly compelling. Much of the style and imagery may seem familiar at first, until you realise it is because it has been copied by more recent sci fi films. Watch this, it is an original.

VHS : The Verdict [1982]
This is indubitably Newman's finest hour. His considered and perfectly drawn portrayal of the consummately unsympathetic character of Frank Galvin - troubled, alcoholic, damaged though initially brilliant lawyer, reduced to ambulance-chasing - now facing the most difficult case of his life, should certainly have gained the 'Oscar' for which he was nominated. This case is metaphorically his downfall or salvation.
Lumet has used his favourite themes of the flawed and somtimes blind aspect of the law in opposition to it's 'justice'.
James Mason is at his oleaginous best as Galvin's nemesis and opponent in court and Charlotte Rampling and Milo O'Shea put in beautiful supporting performances....fantastic !

I return to this film at least once a year, which may be thought a bit sad, but in fact is a testament to its dramatic force. In WW2 London, Donald Sutherland, an Abwehr spy and ex-Kriegsmarine officer, trusted by both Canaris and Hitler, "The Needle" (from his method of disposing of the unwanted...), is uncovered and flees to Western Scotland. On a small island are living crippled ex-pilot Cristopher Cazenove lives, drunken and resentful, with his wife Kate Neligan and their small son. The Needle wants to rendezvous with a U-Boat, in order to transmit in person to Hitler vital information about the likely invasion point in 1944 France.

There are a few weak points in the plot: by 1943-44, the Red Army was already pushing the Wehrmacht aside on ... Read More:

It's easy to find fault with a film that is poorly dubbed and comes in a slightly grainy and blurred print. However, put that to one side and the sheer quality of the filmmaking comes through. The otherworldy and surreal atmosphere is brilliantly created. Even though you know something nasty is about to happen, you can't help but jump. Much of this is due to an astonishing soundtrack that truly makes the film stand out. After you've seen this film you'll appreciate just how crude and amateurish are the typical Hollywood slasher films.

I haven't seen this film in years - which I do appreciate might devalue my credibility as a reviewer. However, even having seen the film only once, I consider it one of the best films I have ever seen.

Artistically, the whole cast performed extremely well. As would be expected of actors such as Kevin Spacey, Laura Linney and Kate Winslet, the story was told in an understated and moving manner. However, it is the story itself which makes this a masterpiece. On the surface it was a crime-thriller tale, which didn't patronise or bore the viewer with a predictable outcome - a rarity itself in Hollywood. It's clear underlying intention was to highlight the flaws in America's Death Penalty punishment laws, and the message was powerful.

Hammer reunited their big three of actors Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee along with director Terrence Fisher for the first time since "The Mummy" for the 1964 film "The Gorgon." Having seen success providing their own twists on Universal's classic monster, Hammer was obviously going for something original. Our story begins with the death of a beautiful artist's model who is found petrified, the seventh victim turned to stone in the last five years. The local physician, Dr. Namaroff (Cushing) convinces the police to pin the murder on the girl's lover, artist Bruno Heitz, who was found hung. When his father, Professor Heitz (Michael Goodliffe) arrives to investigate he encounters a strange crature in the shadows. Turning to stone, the Professor manages to scrawl a note ... Read More:

I could rave for hours about this film, but suffice to say it's the perfect thriller, the template for countless other films and everyone should have it. This edition (the Warner from 2006) is a simply stunning transfer with that true Technicolor feel and all for a fiver. Incredible.
