VHS : The Beatles - Yellow Submarine [1968]
In my case that was 1969. That's when I saw this in a double billing with Barbarella (1968) at West Point, NY.

The music is great and it brings back a part of history. Can the Beatles save Pepperland? Remember we all live in a Yellow Submarine. Instead of just buying the soundtrack, buy the movie and you have them both. I guess I will have to buy it also to hear "Hey, Bulldog!" Of course as with most movies there will always be someone one that prefers the original and knows that it was cut that way on purpose.

And now it is time for a whole new generation to enjoy.

VHS : The Sound Of Music [1965]
If "West Side Story" was the best musical film of the sixties, then "The Sound of Music," adapted from the long-running Broadway musical play about Maria Von Trapp and her singing family, was certainly the most popular...

With a story that includes the right amount of family sentiment (the Von Trapp children never quarrel among themselves), religion (in the Hollywood tradition of serene, kind nuns), romance (actually two romances, one adult, one adolescent), and anti-Nazi feeling (Captain Von Trapp refuses to surrender to the Nazi invaders)--and with director Robert Wise who is in fact a solid, conscientious craftsman and a fluent story-teller mercifully free of grandiose pretensions, "The Sound of Music" is perfect with its sumptuous ... The words 'lost progressive classic' when applied to an album that has not darkened the music room's door in decades are guaranteed to instill foreboding. This original, beautifully played record almost merits the accolade. Released in 1970 to the thudding of jaws hitting table tops, 'I Spider' does owe something in its footings to the likes of Gentle Giant and, in its interplay of sqwawking sax and grand guignol organ, early Van der Graaf Generator. But where it transcends emulation is in the deft seque from prog to modern British jazz. Vibraphone player Lennie Wright and Tom Harris on sax and flute imbued Web with the sensibilities of Neil Ardley and the late and very lost Mike Taylor - jazz's Syd Barrett, echoed in keyboard player and writer Dave ... VHS : Show Boat [1951]
This musical is a true joy. I would place it within the 30 best musicals ever made. Some pseudo casting directors, music experts, and nit-picking purists, may disagree. I saw it recently at home with an audience which included all age groups: from a 7 year old, through a 60 year old cousin. They all agreed that they would like to see it again, some other time. To my judgment, the casting is ideal: Kathryn, fits well into the innocent damsel, who is swept off her feet, falling in love with the dashing gambler (Howard Keel). Joe E. Brown is perfect (as he makes believe his domineering wife, that he is hen-pecked) as he does what he wants, saying" yes dear. The opening sequence where we are shown the riverboat, the pier, the musical-traveling ... Read More:

VHS : Carousel [1956]
Regarded by many as the best Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, it still manages to pack a punch after all these years. Most people will probably already be familiar with the hymn-like standard 'You'll Never Walk Alone', but there are plenty of other gems here that are worth tuning in for. Fans of Frank Sinatra may recognise Billy's 'Soliloquy'. The scene on the beach where Gordon McRae belts it out is now a movie musicals' classic. My personal favourite is the beautifully tender duet 'If I Loved You', a song so loaded with the promise of romance and deeply felt regret all at the same time - surely (or Shirley??) one of the best love songs in any Broadway repertoire.
Another of the musical's high points comes with the opening 'Carousel Waltz' itself, an ... Read More:

VHS : It's A Wonderful Life [1946]
Yes, it is a great life affirming movie with its heart firmly in the right place...BUT...personally I would have prefered not such a happy ending, or a very different kind of happy ending - I just feel that the miraculous turnaround of George's fortunes at the end, while rightly suggesting that all good deeds may be remembered, and returned in kind, missed a real chance to state that happiness didn't have to depend on material wealth at all - After all, when he was given his old life back, George's euphoric happiness was based soley upon his family and friends, regardless of his dire financial state! This was a real chance to bang the point home about the real dangers of capitalism, but it was totally spurned. Indeed, this ending almost suggested, after roundly attacking ... Read More:

VHS : Pink Floyd - In Concert - Delicate Sound Of Thunder [1989]
Having owned the Delicate Sound album for several years I've found it's always one you return to for the Momentary Lapse of Reason tracks- most of which weren't played live again on the Division Bell tour. Although I'm a fan of Roger Waters- era Pink Floyd and his solo work, being 25 my introduction to Floyd was through the David Gilmour- led last days of the band and I still count Momentary Lapse, Delicate Sound, Division Bell and Pulse among my favourite records.
This video should certainly be rereleased properly on DVD (it's currently only available on DVD in a very pricey and hard to find box set also including the CD's), perhaps remastered with some new extra features. Actually as I've just spent £30 on an 18- year old VHS tape EMI will probably release it ... Read More:

VHS : Cliff Richard - Heathcliff [1997]
I wasn't expecting this to be any good, and after studying it at school decided to buy it for a bit of a joke.

This was a hundred times worse than I could have imagined, cringeworthy and veering entirely away from the character of Heathcliff, instead it was something of an egotistical adventure for an ageing Cliff, in which the songs were appalling, weren't catchy and just didn't make sense!

I was paralysed with laughter for the duration of this and for anyone who has any love for Wuthering Heights- avoid it at all costs.

Highlights include the jungle tribe that Heathcliff 'trades' with, and the brooding scenes of Cliff on the moors.

Rubbish.
