VHS : Captives [1995]
It's 2:40 in the morning and have just seen this film on TV and I've come straight online to buy it - it's THAT good!

A refreshing change from the Hollywood glitz, drama and special effects, the film really relies on the actors and the story line and has the most amazing cliff-hanger ending. It is the most enthralling film I've seen for a long while - I didn't want to blink for fear of missing a moment of it.

I'm absolutely hooked and would recommend this film to everyone.

I am dying to know what happens after the ending!

This half of the series is brilliant. There are a couple of fun but silly episodes, but these are compensated for with episodes like Passion, I Only Have Eyes For You, Becoming (parts 1 and 2), Surprise and Innocence. This series is definately worth buying if you are a Buffy fan.

VHS : The Famous Five - Five Go To Smuggler's Top - Parts 1 and 2
Once again Zenith North, the UK-based production team for this series of the televised Famous Five books, has excelled. True to the books in all but a few minor details, this series takes us back to the 1940's idyll in which children played from dawn till dusk in the heat of a glorious British summer.

In this double-bill, we meet the Five - Julian, Dick, George, Anne, and Timmy the dog - on their way to "Smugglers Top", a "rambling sort of a place", according to the children's Uncle Quentin, where they have been sent for the summer holidays. But all is not well at this ancient smugglers' haunt, where strange lights, mysterious marshes and underground tunnels abound. Team up with the Famous Five and discover who ... Read More:

VHS : White Mischief [1987]
Having known a lady who was in Kenya from 1943 (3 years after the events on which this film is based) and having an English wife born in British East Africa a dozen years later, White Mischief was of huge interest to me quite apart from its intrinsic merit.

Jock Delves-Broughton (Joss Ackland) is in financial trouble and has left 1940 England with creditors pressing (not surprising: he spent up to £120,000 annually, equivalent to perhaps £5 million or even £10 million today!). He buys a place near Nairobi and settles with his much younger and very beautiful (especially but not only when unclothed) wife Diana (Greta Scacchi). She has been "bought" by him in return for an allowance of £80,000 annually, for 7 years. She, however, ... Read More:

I grew up on Sesame Street and bought this for my 15 month old with some trepidation about introducing the television into her world. However, it's been a real success. Each episode is 30 mins long, which is an ideal amount of time for a child to be 'plugged in', and the whole family sings along with each other. It actually keeps this wiggly kid still so in my opinion, its worth its weight in gold. I definitely recommend this for exhausted parents needing 5 minutes peace and wanting to ensure their children are watching something worthy.

VHS : Doctor Who - Dragonfire [1987]
To be honest I am not an avid fan of the Sylvester McCoy era but this story, Remembrance and Survival are the only exceptions.

Before I even watched this I had high hopes for it because it oversees the introduction of Ace, one of my fave companions. This story gives her a good introduction and by the time of Survival it's nice to see how much she has matured from here.

The story itself is actually quite good and has plenty of twists and a cast of strong guest characters.

Sylvester McCoy puts on a pretty average performance as the good Doctor (then again to be fair it is the end of only his first season). However Bonnie Langford is diabolical as Mel and makes me releived that this is her final story. Tony Selby mainly ... Read More:

VHS : Doctor Who - Terror Of The Autons - 30th Anniversary - 1963-93 - Full Reconstructed Colour Version [1971]
Having recently read Doctor Who Magazine's 'Fact of Fiction' feature on this story, I was compelled to revisit it. Dusting down my copy I poured a glass of wine and settled down to see if time had been kinder to this than it has to many Doctor Who serials from Jon Pertwee's tenure. Happily I discovered that it had - the introduction of The Master provided what was to become the greatest fictional rivalry since Sherlock Holmes and Moriarty; Jo Grant's comedic turn as the Doctor's ditzy new assistant was an instant success and the return of the sinister and malevolent Autons provided the icing on the cake. Particular highlights must include the evil doll waking and attacking the factory boss, The Master's killer chair, the Autons in carnival heads distributing ... Read More:
