VHS : The Hour Of The Pig [1994]
Clever Parisian lawyer moves to the country to bring law to the people, but finds himself outsmarted by simple country folk at every turn. Of course he decides that if you can't beat them, join them - especially when he finds himself defending a pig on a charge of murder. In a world where a man and a donkey are prepared for execution and the donkey gets a reprieve and the man doesn't, what would you do? In the end he unwittingly makes a lucky escape and the "smart" folk don't. Good clean fun - except for the dirt and squalor - with a memorable turn from Ian Holm as a less-than-upright priest.

VHS : Wallace And Gromit - The Wrong Trousers
This hysterically funny film features Wallace, a bumbling inventor, and his wise dog, Gromit. It's Gromit's birthday, and to his horror, Wallace gives him not only a collar and leash (!) but a mechanical, walking pair of trousers to take him out on "walkies." To make matters worse, a mysterious penguin has moved in, taken over Gromit's room, and, it seems, his spot in Wallace's heart. Gromit leaves home and discovers the penguin is the wanted criminal "Feathers," who plans to use the mechanical pants to steal a priceless diamond.

The story is very clever, and the wonderful claymation completely enchanted me. It's very droll and sly, often poignant, and really, really funny. Clever Gromit, absent-minded Wallace, and the sinister penguin ... Read More:

VHS : Cool Hand Luke [1967]
The anti-establishment attitude of the Sixties is personified in the lead character of Stuart Rosenberg's "Cool Hand Luke." While Paul Newman is indeed "cool" in every sense of the word in the title role, the film unfortunately fails to recreate that same restless energy and urgency of "Rebel Without A Cause" (1955) - the spiritual predecessor of "Cool Hand Luke" from the decade prior.

Luke Jackson (Newman) is caught vandalizing parking meters early one morning. As punishment for his deed, he is sentenced to a prison farm chain gang for two years. Unsurprisingly, Luke refuses to conform to the norms imposed on him by both the guards and the other prisoners. His defiance turns him into a folk hero among his fellow inmates but the prison ... Rossiter's last series as R.I.Perrin and he breaks all comedy boundaries yet again, the commune is sublime and ridiculous, the chef (McBlain) is incoherrant, and the culmination of this is anarchy presided over by Reggie.

This is a must buy for lovers of intelligent comedy

VHS : Dances With Wolves [1991]
Kevin Costner has always been one of those actors you either love or hate, much like the singing and celebrity of Victoria Beckham or Marmite.

It is unfortunate then, that it is these personal feelings which cloud judgement about whether or not to see a film. Because, in a time when the idea of race relations is once again at the forefront of the news, this simple story of a man open to change can tell us a lot.

Lt John Dunbar (Coster) is a civil war hero. Given the choice of outpost as a reward for a selfless act on the battlefield, he picks the furthest place he can find, the prairee. Also known as Indian country.

Far from being the war-mongering madmen his superiors are presented as, Dunbar is a quiet, docile man, ... Read More:

VHS : Pride And Prejudice [1940]
I hadn't seen this film since I was a child, and didn't have the highest expectations having heard throughly mixed comments surrounding it. I can honestly say that it was an absolutely lovely surprise. No, it isn't completely faithful to the novel, but neither is any other adaptation (not even the much loved 1995 version- I don't remember any scene in the novel where Darcy takes a bath or a dip in the lake), and it's true that the costumes are far more Civil War than English Regency, but this is one of the rare examples in which it doesn't really matter because it's just so charmingly done.

Greer Garson is simply magnificent as Elizabeth Bennet- poised, intelligent, gracious and witty and is excellently matched by Laurence Olivier's Darcy. These two prove ... Read More:

VHS : Whisky Galore [1949]
A great film that perfectly depicts the way of life even today in the Hebrides.A cargo of whisky sinking into the sea,but not before the locals get their share first.
A classic scene is Duncan MacRae swallowing all the evidence before the exciseman enters his house.
Brilliant scenery, great acting and a brilliant music score.
On a lighter note, get a few friends round, watch the film together, and every time the cast have a dram you have one with them.
By the end of the film you think you're in Todday with them!!!
