VHS : Leeds United - The Glory Years 1965-1975 [1988]
I find myself writing this some 18 years after I bought the video on its initial release (and the tape is wearing fast - get moving, Auntie Beeb, how about a DVD?). And my view remains that this, surely, is the definitive visual account of Leeds' finest years.

A great deal is packed into its 90 minutes - and the viewer is treated to countless goals and action from the BBC's wealth of archives from those 10 magnificent years.

It is also serves as a reminder - as though one were needed - of how many times Leeds fell at the final hurdle. Eleven times, to be exact - and the video at times gives more than a hint that a few of those losses were not confined to just bad luck or being outplayed on the day.

VHS : Pokemon - The First Movie [2000]

In the beginning, God created man. And He saw that it was good. Then Man created Pokemon. And it too, was good.

This is the first, and in my opinion, definitive, movie that features the Japanese creations, Pokemon. A craze that took the whole world by storm back in the late 90's, and is still going strong today. You only have to look at the number of Pokemon movies that exist now to see that. But there can only be one number one. And this is it. Without a doubt. I can honestly say that even now, eight years on, this movie still looks as good as new. The chemistry between Ash and Pikachu is as high as it ever was, and the characters all work well together, the old guard of Ash, Misty and Brock providing the majority of the lines. ... Read More:

VHS : The Taming Of The Shrew [1967]
I'm studying this play and bought this Franco Zafirrelli / Elizabeth Burton version as it was dirt cheap on amazon. I found it more enjoyable than the BBC version (as did my wife), even though we both preferred John Cleese's to Richard Burton's Petruchio. It gains over the BBC version by not having that awkward out of place hymn at the end (and after Shakespeare note-worthily eschewed religious arguments in Kate's final speech)! Also, the dialogue is here more clearly and comprehensibly spoken; it is just a shame it misses out the majority of it! There are a lot of visual gags to retain the interest of those who do not follow the language used. Unfortunately it also misses some of the plot points for the minor characters along the way, although it does ... Read More:

This was the season where Damon Hill finally won the world championship. It also seen the debut of super rookie Jacques Villeneuve who nearly won the title at his first attempt as Hill began to choke toward the end of the season, and Villeneuve had a late surge.

Schumacher joined Ferrari and would stay there until his retirement in 2006. He was able to drag the 'red bus' to three victories.

David Coulthard joined a struggling, winless McLaren, joining Häkkinen for what turned out to be a six season partnership. He remained there until 2004.

Olivier Panis won a fantastically unpredictable race in Monaco, for his one and only GP victory.

This was Martin Brundle's final season, as Jordan left him standing ... Read More:

VHS : Doctor Who - The Invasion Of Time [1978]
As a Doctor Who fan I am duty-bound to see the good in every story from the classic series; I can even see The Myrka in a (vaguely) positive light and trust me, that ain't easy to do! For me, part of being a true fan is seeing something good in the weakest stories - true, this isn't what I envisaged as a callow 13 year-old in 1985 reading Terrance Dicks' Target novelisation, but 1970's 'Who' was made on a shoestring for the most part and the overwhelmingly ambitious creatures and worlds created within it were never going to be anywhere near as impressive when televised. Although I love the new series I often hanker for the slow-pace and often more thought-provoking episodes of yesteryear - this story has betrayal, duplicitousness ,false-enemies, Leela, the ... VHS : Dennis [1993]
After my young son watched this film twice in one day I decided to watch with him, at the third showing!. `Dennis` is so typical of all children at that age, and I could see what my son found so amusing as he would tend to do the same things given half the chance. Having a bad guy also helped to keep the story going. For us adults though, Walter Matthau proves to be a real comic genius. Think of `Home Alone` but without Macaulay Culkin, thank goodness!.
