Pretty good as a film - but a bit po-faced. Watching it, you'd never guess that the original book is actually very funny.

VHS : The Killing Of Sister George [1968]
This film is absolutely brilliant and completely groundbreaking. It's hard to believe that it takes a small country like Great Britain to produce the best movies but we certainly showed Hollywood a thing or two back in the sixties when we were the centre of the universe. The performances and storyline in this faultless piece of celluloid make it unmissable and one that anybody would be proud to own in their DVD collection.

VHS : Veronika Voss [1981]
One of Fassbinder's final films, Veronika Voss exists in the same cinematic world as the films that would bookend it's creation, with the story drawing parallels both thematically and subtextually with part two of the BRD trilogy, Lola, whilst employing the same use of stylised, theatrical mise-en-scene featured in his final film proper, Querelle. As a result of this, Veronkia Voss comes across as a much stranger film than it actually is, seeming like a post-modernist melange of social melodrama with elements of 40's cinematic pastiche, with Fassbinder and his cinematographer Xaver Schwarzenberger capturing the action in glorious black and white against some stunning & intricate examples of production design. Even the performances seem poised and affected, as ... Read More:

VHS : Black Cat, White Cat [1999]
There are some images you will only see in an Emir Kusturica film: a drunkard riding a pig; a midget in full bridal array hiding in a tree stump; a gangster wiping himself down with a live goose; a huge singer plucking nails from a plank with her bottom... Black Cat White Cat does not disappoint as it careers through the plot with drunken grace.

In my book, this was an even better film than his prize-winning Underground - perhaps because it was less ambitious. Free from portraying the horror of war and oppression that blighted his homeland, Kusturica could really let his lurid imagination off the leash. And oh boy - didn't he just do that. Magical realism, slapstick, irreverence and peculiar charm. Irresistable.

VHS : Down By Law [1986]
This is one of the best films I have ever seen. The photography is stunning throughout, atmospherically filmed in b&w, capturing both the seedy side of New Orleans in the 1980s and the beauty of the Louisiana bayous. It is essentially a black comedy about the interplay between the three central characters (Tom Waits is Zack, the unemployed DJ, John Lurie is Jack the small time pimp and Roberto Benigni is Bob, the wacky Italian tourist) who for dubious reasons all find themselves thrown together in a New Orleans jail. The film is beautifully understated - there are many periods when nothing much is happening, but it's magnificently enacted, adding comic tension, creating extra dynamic between the characters. The director, Jim Jarmusch said about the film: "I would call ... Read More:
