VHS : Malcolm X [1992]
I am inspired by the story of Malcolm X. Here is a man that did make a difference. He is a true example of bravery.

His story is well told by Spike Lee. Its strange why Alex Haley (the author of Malcolm's autobiography of which the film is based) does not appear in the film at all given the close working relationship between Malcolm and the author so near the end of his life. Regretably the UK released version of the film has no real extras. A commentary and a few good documentaries on the man would help.

However the whole film is good from start to finish and does well to show the development of Malcolm from troubled youth to national champion. The last 15 to 20 minutes is so moving as Malcolm who gave so much for ... Read More:

If I could give this 0 stars I would. I seriously can't understand why anyone would give this 5 stars! Ok fine, it's good to see a mainstream lesbian film but the main characters are just plain annoying and the plot is ridiculous. I was cringing the whole way through.

VHS : I Stand Alone [1999]
in style of "Henry - Portrait of a Serial Killer", just BETTER.
Often compared to "Taxi Driver", just BETTER.
Gaspar Noe, along with Abel Ferrara belongs to the world's best directors in my opinion. "I stand alone" or "Seul contre tous" (Original French title) is his best film. He doesn't judge "the butcher" he just shows him as he is. And that is good so. Phillipe Nahon portrays the butcher well. An outstanding actor. A must see.

In this magnificent film, Gerard Depardieu does his best job in all the movies I've seen from him. The story is so beautiful and the mise-en scene is just incredible, simulating perfectly the period in which the story happened. The costumes are just amazing, incredible!!!

For people who speak or understand French this must be one of the most beautiful films in this language, and for those who think it is a romantic language, please watch this movie!!!

I can only recommend this film. Enjoy!!!

VHS : The Slingshot [1993]
Ake Sandgren's "The Slingshot" is a moving, poignant film. Set in Stockholm in the 1920's, Sandgren envelopes us into the world of a twelve year old boy, struggling to find his own way in the world. With his Jewish Mother and Socialist Father, life is not easy, but with a little help from his imagination, turns - what to an adult is taboo - into a slingshot. This is touching, moving, poignant, melancholic, happy and humourous. Ake Sandgren takes us away from ourselves and a glimpse back on childhood, and the relentless ache of growing. Sandgren uses some delightful details and a sophisticated use of imagery. This film is worth high merits, watch it!

VHS : Walkabout [1971]
"Into my heart a air that chills from far yon country blows"...... a most beautiful film, visual poetry a sumptious feast from Roeg, we are taken with Agutter and a young Roeg Junior across the Australian Outback when the two siblings are abandoned by their Father's suicide and botched attempts to kill them. They are befriended and saved by a young Aborigine and together they experience their own rites of passage. The most vivid and memorable scene is when later Agutter now an adult has a flashback over her husbands' shoulder and we are taken back to that lost land of innocence and freedom one to which she can never return as can none of us

I was expecting really good things of this movie based on its reputation. No doubt the stage show works really well; the potential is clearly there. For me, John Waters messes this up by taking a gross and crude approach of self-parody and ridicule which for me served both to make it less funny and to reduce the impact of the racisim / sizism / corruption message. Subtly camp would have been much sharper, I feel. The pace falls flat, much of it is dull even with the spectacle of Divine the good dancing etc. I suspect I should have watched the 2007 version, which since it is not by John Waters probably does it better, but this has put me off - at least for quite a while.
