VHS : Spider [2003]
A subtle, slow and sad film, this. Ralph Fiennes, when he's on top of his game, does understatement as well as anybody, as anoyone who's seen his performance in The Constant Gardener will know. Here, he is heartbreaking as the deeply troubled protaganist of the title; a stutterning, shambling man in a scruffy coat, whose stubby, chewed, nocotine-stained fingers speak of a soul in torment as poignantly as any words could. Released from an asylum after an unspecified number of years, Spider returns to his old haunts and slowly, gradually, the ghosts from his past that have helped shape this piece of human wreckage begin to emerge.
This is not an easy film to watch. Cronenberg will not be rushed, and does not patronise the viewer by offering ... Read More:

VHS : La Bonne Annee [1973]
La Bonne Annee is a magical piece of film making - a romance cum comedy-thriller with real emotional depth and irresistably charismatic leads in Lino Ventura and the impossibly sexy Francoise Fabian. Ventura gives a masterclass in film acting; his lugubrious features register the subtlest responses, the smallest emotions. Claude Lelouche handles the tone with extraordinary skill - the shift from the broad comedy of the 'heist' plot to the darker atmospherics of the love story is never forced. The photography, especially in the black and white segments which frame the central narrative, is wonderfully moody and the film manages to combine a huge sense of fun with a genuinely moving emotional charge. In part an ironic commentary on Lelouche's earlier and better ... Read More:

Simply lovely. A must-watch film and one of my all time favourites. It may be long, black & white, old and subtitled (to the non French speakers) but please don't let any of these put you off. It's a masterpiece!

VHS : Day Of Wrath [1943]
First and foremost, yes this is a masterpiece in every sense of the word. Dreyer bases his story on a historical episode which took place in Norway in the 16.th century (Norway being part of Denmark then). As far as I remember, the priest's widow was acquitted of witchcraft and thus escaped the fire - the young woman (Lisbeth Movin) in the film is not so lucky.
It was said of Dreyer, that he made his actors do their uttermost to become the caracters they were supposed to play. The priest (Thorkil Roose) and his mother (Sigrid Neiiendam)were both actors at the Royal Theatre, the young people, the wife (Lisbeth Movin) and the priest's son (Preben Lerdorff Rye)had just started their careers. Preben L-R became a distinguished actor both at the theatre and in films - he ... Read More:

VHS : Existenz [1999]
Love it or loathe it, this movie is essentially a one line gag, although it will probably take you 93 minutes to get the joke. Although it's about a new totally immersive virtual reality game [eXistenZ], the plot has nothing in common with films like 'The Matrix' - there's no alien 'war of the worlds' threat or suchlike. In fact this film has more in common with having hot tea and crumpets inside Star Trek's Holodeck with the safety protocols off. Besides eXistenZ is firmly set in our world and time, although it probably does represent a glimpse of the Playstation-8 touchie/feelie gaming future. Like 'Sixth Sense', the films power is totally dependent on not knowing what happens at the end (and the middle for that matter). I don't see how anyone could criticise the final scenes ... VHS : High Heels [1991]
Like all great Almodovar movies, traditional gender roles are subverted in 'High Heels'. In fact for WASP suburbanite America, much of this plot would seem like an episode of Jerry Springer. Mother abandons daughter for singing career, daughter marries mother's former lover, mother continues to have affair with son-in-law while daughter becomes pregnant through a night of passion with a drag queen. How ironic it is then that Almodovar takes much of his influence for this movie from Douglas Sirk. A director noted for his melodramas about late 50's/early 60's family life amongst WASP suburanites in America. In fact this meshing of a traditional film genre with more modern edgy characters has even been given a name - an Almodrama -.

The title 'High Heels' refers to the time ... Read More:
