VHS : City Of Joy [1992]
Once in a while a film comes along that has the power to change your mind about certain pre-conceived ideas. This is one such film. City of Joy never shys away from the power of its message and its graphic picture of life in a poor part of a large and spralling Indian city. Yes, at times it can be a little hard to swallow - the big American doctor (Patrick Swayze) waltzing onto the scene - but its not over sickly sweet and you come away feeling that you have been taught a valuable lesson. That life is for living, not for spectating and you must live each moment and treasure each experience; savour it. You never know when it can be taken from you.

VHS : The Killing Fields [1984]
This is a beautifully made, moving film depicting the harsh regime of the Khmer Rouge communist revolutionaries in 1970's Cambodia. The film focuses on the real-life relationship between Cambodian Dith Pran and American journalist Sidney Schanberg. The acting is superb, particularly from Dr. Haing S Ngor who played the part of Dith Pran and who did himself survive the Killing Fields.
In my opinion, it is necessary to have a background knowledge of the political events during this time (eg. the Cambodian government being overthrown by the Khmer Rouge and the subsequent evacuation of the cities) as without this, the film may be confusing in parts. However, this DVD does helpfully give the viewer the option to choose a brief historical recounting ... Read More:

William Hurt is fantastic in this film as the brilliant scientist (Dr. Eddie Jessup) who is disillusioned with 'normal' life & seeking a greater truth beyond the boundaries of science & religion. The supporting cast are also brilliant. Blair Brown as Jessup's long suffering & concerned wife, Bob Balaban as his friend & colleague, Arthur (a familiar face from films such as close Encounters of the third kind & 2010) & Charles Haid as the highrate a initially highly sceptical (and it his to be said hugely entertaining) Mason Parish.

Often these types of films can come across as cheesy & more comical than frightening. This is more often than not accompanied by poor acting, which doesn't help matters as the actors rarely come across as ... Read More:

This film is about two people who do not know a whole lot about love. The woman is interested in marriage, purely to be supported by a man. The man, has little faith in love, prefers to have casual relationships and seems happy to go about his bachelor business. The two lives soon co-join and the viewer is presented with a study on how their attitudes and feelings towards one another change. It is a refreshing film in its portrayal of this unconvential romance.
Above all, it is a French film which is light-hearted, warm and will leave a smile on your face, mixed with a few insights on the timeless problems. The soundtrack also is worth mentionning - it is warm and fun, adding to this romantic comedy.
I would consider buying it if you are after some intelligently ... Read More:

A beautiful, clever comedy which plays on the nature of both Greeks and Italians in a rather unbelievable story as far as the total isolation of a platoon of Italian soldiers on a Greek island for the entire duration of the world war II.
But the beauty of the comedy is based on this very isolation and the way these soldiers became part of the community on the island, which was deprived of the men who were taken prisoners by the Germans or were away fighting the war.
The humor is intensive, logical and tangible and the conversations brilliant especially in the original languages.
The English translation is good but can never represent the tone and the special expressions of the original language.
For those who know the character of both Greeks and Italians this ... Read More:

This is a beautiful film but it doesn't answer questions that I liked to have answered. Like, why is that bird so cheesed off with her ex? With barely any flashback used at all, we are in danger of not caring about her. This is a film that gives you a story but cheats you out of directions you hoped it would go in. The result is a stylish little French number that is also mediocre. For me it lacked any kind of profundity, save the simulacrum of it it attempts to create. That said, it does capture life post the revolution in Poland well.

This film is amazing, but I would recomend that you should watch the Evil Dead Trilogy first(which includes Evil Dead 1, 2 and Evil Dead 3 Army Of Darkness) and see if you like the humor of them.

Holy Virgin vs The Evil Dead has got sex, and horror... what more do you want.

Its definatly "One To Watch."

Was Jean Cocteau the Oscar Wilde of cinema? Like Wilde's writings, I'm never sure if Cocteau's films are as deep as their surfaces suggest, or if they are all marvelous surface, but the more I see them, the less inclined I am to worry about that, because they are gorgeous.
This film can strike one as a tad pretentious, a precious little dance with myth, but for me, at least, a second viewing dispelled that sense. Quite unlike any other film I can name, more mature than La Belle et la Bete, a modern (1949 modern) re-imagining of Greek myth by way of Rilke, dreamlike in the best sense, mysterious and moving, with Death and her servant Heurtebise oddly the most touching characters. Highly highly recommended.
