Around three years ago my partner and I decided to go camping in Wales, revisiting a site he had stayed at many years ago. It turns out that we were cool even then, but didn't know it. After many enjoyable visits we began to consider the possibility of going to ... other sites. But where to start? A few tentative searches on the internet and a leaf through the Rough Guide confirmed our suspicions. We were cowards. What we wanted was for someone to nudge us in the ribs and point us towards campsites with stunning views, friendly owners and like-minded souls. And tell us what we could do if it rained. And give us a sneak preview of the place whilst not spoiling too much.

Well, Cool Camping does just that. The first few pages allow ... Read More:

I was reluctant to read this book, I'll readily admit it. I'd been passing it by in bookshops for a few years, amused by the title but predisposed to see it as nothing more than silly gibberish. However, after my fiancee started reading Jasper Fforde and I followed accordingly, I decided to give this a try. It's far more subtle than Fforde, not better or worse, but different. Following the first person narrative conventions of Chandler and Hammett's excellent stories whilst simultaneously offering a ludicrously skewed view of life in a British seaside town thats rather past it's best. I was five chapters in before I realised just how good a writer Pryce is. Can't wait to read Louie Knight's further adventures!

This is probably the best Rough Guide I've ever used and there have been many!

It really is all you need to find your way round this dazzling country,at least for a first visit.
Wales is surely a land of contrasts but if you make this guide your companion there should be few surprises.
As ever it is very strong on arrival, accommodation and restaurants although we did experience an unpleasant restaurant in Conwy it was for the most part extremely reliable.

The maps of town centres are invaluable and make sure you find time to read the history section before you go.

We spent a week in St Davids and a week in the Conwy valley this month and referred to this book constantly. For example it suggests you visit Bodnant ... Read More:

I have treasured these books since childhood, luckily for me my first child is approaching the age where I can read them to him. I still remember being totally captivated by the characters and stories - in the way Harry Potter has for a new generation. Like the Potter, these books chronicle the ancient battle of good versus evil - and how the choices we make for ourselves can influence the outcome. And what stories! I know there has been a film, but refused to watch it on the grounds that these stories should be read in order, and the film appeared to jump right in at the middle. I cannot recommend these books highly enough.

As a working journalist, this is the only book I (and every colleague I've ever worked with on any newsdesk) reach for time and time again. Not only is it bang up to date, it explains all aspects of reporting law clearly and succinctly.
Unsure of what libel is? How to defend against it? Are you in contempt of court? Breaching the Official Secrets Act? Taking photographs of children? Invading somebody's privacy? McNae's knows. And it's written in a way to tell you quickly.
It's known as The Bible in the regional newsrooms I've worked in all my life - and it's easy to see why when you read it. I can't recommend this highly enough: EVERY reporter should have their own copy.

I purchased this book not through an interest in gardening, or even in particular an interest in the Welsh Valleys but because of my fondness of Terry Walton's snippets on the Jeremy Vine show on Radio 2 and his sense of humour.

I wasn't sure what to expect, but what I found was an enthusiastically written and heart felt tome which is harder than any book I've read in recent years (with the exception, sadly, of the Harry Potter series!) to put down.

It's obvious from the start that Terry enjoyed writting the book and is keen to share every aspect of his life, memories and gardening tips!

The book not only provides a fascinating insight to life in the Rhondda over the past 60 years but also many interesting stories about what has been ... Read More:

This is the book that made me want to know more about microfinance, I found it very inspiring and Dr Yunus became my personal hero.
I then learned more about microfinance, talked to senior microfinance experts, and even though microfinance is indeed a powerfull tool to fight poverty, it is not the panacea it sometimes claims to be.

Microfinance can have a negative impact on social fabric, increasing tensions inside communities, it can also be used by governments of developping countries as a way to privatise social welfare, typically after massive lay-offs from the private sector(why spend public money on unemployment benefits, minimum wage, let's bring microfinance instead to help the poor..).
I don't mean to sound cynical or disillusioned, my point is ... Read More:

Considering it a sad omission that no one has yet seen fit to comment, I thought I would present my own 'humble offering'.

The many individuals involved in bringing this work into being are to be hugely congratulated. The design and execution are superb and the whole is richly illustrated. Given that reference works aren't generally amenable to 'reinvention', the unobtrusive and cleanly set page design can be ajudged successful by the very fact that it doesn't draw attention to itself and instead lets the content 'speak for itself'.

In this era of the rapid availability of online information at "one's fingertips" it is useful to be reminded that there is still a place for intelligently conceived and rigorous print reference works on important themes.
