At 60p per disk with picture & sound quality virtually indistinquishable from an original digital transmission or pre-recorded DVD these disks are - Simply Brilliant! I am on my second pack & have had no trouble whatsoever. Who cares about not having individual boxes when they take up so much space anyway?

Swapped out an 80GB Seagate Barracuda for this Western Digital 500GB baby. Easy enough to install: Acronis True Image, straight swap, restore the disk image and resize the disk partitions (using EASEUS Home Partition Manager - a free utility). I don't think it's quite as quiet as the one its replaced but it's not quite Whisper Quiet. That said it's nothing like as bad as a Maxtor I had in a Dell which sounded like someone rattling a bag of marbles. Being OEM you just get the drive, no cables, no jumpers, no instructions (though you can find them on the WD website itself under Support). It doesn't have a "legacy power connector" something which worried me but turned out to be OK as the power comes via the ... Read More:

All was well at first, then after a day or two the connection started to drop out. It started as an occasional thing then it got more frequent, until now, several weeks after purchase, it drops out many times a day and is therefore practically unusable. The same thing happens no matter which PC is used to access the device. To rescue our data I connected the drive up to a PC using the Freecom's USB connection. It didn't work. All that happened was that it caused the PC to reboot! This was tried 3 times with different USB leads, all with the same result. We regularly use USB hard drives to backup our PCs and have never had a problem. There is something seriously wrong with this unit.

After having had several bad experiences with data loss in external hard drives in the past, I was at first unwilling to buy another. However, I have had this drive for well over a year now, dropped it from several feet onto hard ground several times and not been too kind to it, and it still works FANTASTICALLY. Barely a whisper, no vibrations at all and only the tiniest hint of warmth. Very highly recommended.
