I've had a chance to test this out a bit and am pleased with the product: the image is bright and quite sharp though it doesn't of course have that 'wow' clarity of optics at treble the price (or more). The casing seems like it would be adequate to absorb damage from light falls, but I wouldn't want to expose it to anything much more substantial. One thing that surprised me, considering the price, was the weight of the scope: it is not heavy but feels pleasantly balanced and solid in the hand. A tripod is generally a good idea at magnifications of 20x and higher so it might be worth picking one up, depending upon just how studied your viewing needs to be. It is not absolutely essential.
