There was no previous review for this video camera, but as the cheaper models seemed to have got quite good reviews and it looks good I thought this would be a safe bet! Unfortunately, although there are some very good features including the bundled software the biggest problem was the noise from the optical zoom. The motor used to move the lens is so loud it is picked up by the microphone, it is so evident on playback that you can't use the zoom function! The auto focus seems slow to respond and not always accurate, so overall I can't recommend this particular model.

Panasonic HDC-SD5 High Definiton SD Card Camcorder - Silver This camera is a revelation. The picture quality is excellent and I can't fault the build quality at all. Playback through my TV and computer are top rate but I have had some issues. 1) My six month old Panasonic HDD / Freeview box doesn't recognise the AVCHD card format so I can't play the videos directly from the SD card, it has to go through the wires. 2) My brand new computer will recognise the card but it is very slow to transfer the data. (30 minutes for 7gb). Looks great, professional styling, nice to hold and feels much better than average build quality for this level of camera. Easy to use. Optical stabilisation is weak, but perhaps you shouldn't expect it to do too much when zooming in. Good range of easily accessed manual controls. Down side is that none of the accessories are available in the UK at present - eg: external mic, carrying case, lense adaptors etc. Also, the TOD file system is a bit of a pain by not allowing file transfer in full HD mode direct into Final Cut Express or iMovie 08 on a Mac - but there are workarounds and image quality is still impressive - but I'm judging it simply as a user rather than an enthusiast..... This is a really nifty piece of equipment. Easy and fun to just pick up and use and great for making home movies. I would recommend to both people who are novices to camcorders and also to people who are more experienced videographers.
