I started a few years ago with the Canon XM1, and was taken with its simplicity of operation, and its outstanding results. When the XL1s came out I bought that too, based on my happy experiences with the XM1. Though I use the XL1s much of the time on production shoots, I have a new 'baby' with the XM2. This camera is a 'no nonsense' high performance tool with almost no vices. It is capable of doing about 95% of the work I do with the XL1s, and as a number 2 unit to my XL1s, it has relegated my old trusty XM1 to the 'back up box' (not that has since been needed). The XM2 has to be the best 'under £2000' camera buy I have ever made. The XM2 is noticably sharper, more stable and even easier to use than the XM1.

I had to make a choice between the Sony SR55, Sony SR35 and the Panasonic SDR H40. So I went for the Panasonic as it was cheaper. OMG what a load of rubbish that was. The image quality is awful. Anything other than perfect lighting conditions and it is of no use. Too sunny and it struggles. In low light it struggles and when I say low light I mean anything indoors. It is juddery, pixellated and you get a trace on objects as you pan.

So that went back and replaced it with the Sony SR55. It is 10 times better. picture quality is far superior and working with the finished file was also easier as it is in mpeg2, something that was much harder on the Panasonic.

I bought this Camcorder a while ago in a sales at Currys. Despite the odd bits and pieces you dont get in the box (even though it says on the Sony site etc etc what is contained in the box and what is not!!), I cannot fault this piece of kit.

One tip for those buying hard drive and memory card camcorders - I know a person at work who had a Sony HDD Camcorder when going to Disney for three weeks. Unfortunately it was dropped and the damage to the HDD was substantial enough to render it useless. This affected them so badly I purchased this machine with its 'old fashioned' mini dv tapes. At least they cant be destroyed so easily (as long as they are kept safe).

Looks great, professional styling, nice to hold and feels much better than average build quality for this level of camera. Easy to use. Optical stabilisation is weak, but perhaps you shouldn't expect it to do too much when zooming in. Good range of easily accessed manual controls. Down side is that none of the accessories are available in the UK at present - eg: external mic, carrying case, lense adaptors etc. Also, the TOD file system is a bit of a pain by not allowing file transfer in full HD mode direct into Final Cut Express or iMovie 08 on a Mac - but there are workarounds and image quality is still impressive - but I'm judging it simply as a user rather than an enthusiast..... For me it certainly does what I want and notwithstanding naff ... Read More:

I brought this camera a couple of weeks ago now and it's really not that bad to be honest. I'm a filmmaker and my previous camera was a canon xl1, which is a semi-pro model, so I do know what i'm talking about in terms of cameras etc.
To start off, its not perfect, there's camera shake which I ironed out with a mono pod, but its difficult to get rid of.
The exposure isn't that great, it tends to underexpose and so I'd recommend that one over-exposes the picture, unless its very very bright using the exposure compensation.
The auto focus is sluggish, but you can adjust it in various ways, you basicly need to get used to the camera and find out the limitations etc, then its not so bad. Use the focus lock to avoid any problems, also ... Read More:

Absoulute waste of money, focus is slow to react, the camara takes a picure its that slow at least 2 seconds, pray the subject does want to move for a while, doesnt like quite a few sd cards keeps locking them out the bundled software might be ok couldnt comment at that though refused to except the serial on the box or inside the battery compartment you can always phone them but you wont have any success there either my advice for the money go and by a mini dv camara and a firewire cable and pcmcia card if you dont have one for around the same price your be happier.
