Most people like to rave about the kit they buy. Cognitive dissonance! Let's be impartial. I've used the E520 for a month after buying through Amazon. It's a competitive camera in its price range. The compromises are all about the Four Thirds standard. Shorter focal lengths (half those of 35mm film cameras) go towards lighter weight and very good zoom range effectively 28mm - 300mm in 35mm equivalent with the two kit lenses. But also a smaller sensor for the megapixels with consequent noise problems to manage. You have to study the manual to get the best out of the E520. The most useful online review is of its immediate predecessor the E510, in dpreview.com. Olympus' compromise has been to add strong automatic noise reduction which ... Read More:

I bought this camera to use on a recent holiday. It was very easy to use as it had a 'Best shot' function where you select what conditions you are shooting in e.g. sunlight, portrait, landscape etc. and it adjusts the camera settings so you get the best picture in those conditions. The controls are very simple and photos are easily uploaded onto your computer via USB and the 'drag and drop' system. Also has a good 'youtube' video function, so videos can be uploaded directly onto Youtube

However, if you do buy this camera, make sure you buy a SDHC memory card, as this is not included. Without it, you will find you can only store about 4 photos on the camera before the memory's full, which is not very useful when abroad!

Dissapointed with the quality of photos. Comparing the 1010 to its previous model, 840 - there was a big difference in quality of photos. 1010 was blurry around the edges and 840 was crisp. This is the disadvantage of having all the extra's packed into a compact camera- however, you would think that Olympus make the newer model atleast of the same quality. Fine for regular photos, but as soon as you want to do some cropping and blowing photos to larger sizes, sacrifice quality a great deal. I find the 840 the better option, or even sharper photos are produced by Casio. Can't comment on other brands of camera's, as I haven't used them as yet. I would recommend you try it out in the shop first, and make a decision.

I've had this camera for a few months now. I've recently traveled around the world and I took this along for the ride. There are some really nice features to the camera:

* Touch sensitive buttons
* Nice big crystal clear display
*Pretty decent battery life
* HD Movies
* Wide angle lens
* Smile detection is a great feature

Unfortunately to get anything near usable picture wise you really have to fight with the camera to get results, the picture quality for what the cameras spec promises in pictures with no flash there is a lot of noise in both the back and foreground, the night shots are really unusable, very poor. The image processing during night mode is frustrating at times.

I needed a discreet small camera for everyday and candid use. Normally I use a Canon 400D. I am very pleased with the performance and results of this camera. It took a while to become familiar with all the controls and features. But now I have, it's a great performer and I carry it with me every day. It produces excellent prints with good colour saturation. I set it to 7M pixels. there is also plenty of versatility on the flash too. I especially like the slide show feature. Just plug it into the TV and off you go it will even provide music if you wish (a little basic but it helps with the mood) and for less than £100 it's a winner with me.
