And a great value kit.

As a child I always used throw offs from my parents. Old canon or pentax 35mm basic things. Then I got a Nikon EM. Other than easier use of flash, I am well aware that an EM was not fit to sit next to something like... oh, an F2A. But the EM was great for me and I took many good pictures with it. I still have the EM and it still works.

Since those days, my EM rarely sees the light of day as I am much older and I like the convienience of the digital age.

I went digital first with compacts that I could carry anywhere. Fuji's FinePix4700 was my first digital camera. Such cameras of course unless used in ideal amounts of natural light quickly show weaknesses. But it was good and ... Read More:

I'll start by clarifying why I gave this only 3 stars, the lens is such a huge let down.

The Canon 400D in itself is a fantastic camera. The picture quality is excellent and the 10.1mp is more than enough for the amateur photographer to create extremely decent photos that can be blown up to poster size and put on the wall.

The speed of the camera is fairly decent, it shoots at 3 frames per second. Bear in mind this is an amateur camera it's very fast. The 2.5" screen is a good size to preview images and is very clear. I find the camera is very easy to use if you are new to the world of Digital SLR and yet still has enough complex features to be able to customize your photography. The 400D is compatible with Canon EF and EF-S lenses and ... Read More:

£79 for this lens is a joke!!!
If it cost £250 it would still be worth it. The results are stunning. Easily better than my 18-200 Sigma in all areas(£220). Dont bother with the F1.4 version it really isnt any better. Works really well with my D80.
Very light but well built for a chinese lens. Dont let the China part put you off. My D80 is made in thailand!!
Best value lens on the market.

This is a fantastic lens. I was originally looking at some other cheaper makes but so dam glad I parted with the extra money (which in truth was not that much more).
As the others write, the lens is Sharpe and very salient. A silly little thing which I really like is the fact you can have the autofocus setting on and still be able to manually help it a little without the usual horrible noise from the motor sounding like you're about to severely damage it. No idea if this is really allowed or not but seems not to damage it and allows me to get that required picture much faster.
In short, another happy owner of this lens. If you want to see some pics taken with it go to www.flickr.com/photos/marcoastesiano where you can see some quick snaps of some fruit ... Read More:

I bought this lens about eight months ago for my Canon 350D. If like me you bought the kit that comes bundled with the 18-55mm lens you'll notice there is a big gap when it comes to zoom/telephoto shots, this is a great budget tele-photo zoom lens that does what it says on the tin, and fills the gap nicely.

I am an amateur photographer at best and still learning, but after using the lens for a while I was disappointed to learn that the f stop values really do make a big difference - the widest aperture you will be able to set this lens to is 4.0 at 75mm and only 5.6 at 300mm, if your really serious you need a fast lens like f/2.8, and definitely with IS (image stabilisation) - the lens is not that heavy (for me), but during a long shoot it starts to feel like a ... the end of the lens rotates, so this hood cannot have the nice petal shape. it also has to cope with the full range of focal lengths. after all these compromises, it probably is not worth the bother - it does not offer much shade for the lens.

one also has to wonder why canon cannot just bundle the hood with the lens.

I purchased this lens as I was selling my house and wanted to add depth and scale to the photos having seen some of the pathetic attempts from so called photographers that some agents use. The estate agents were so impressed with the pictures that they only used the ones that I took (Most at 10mm). Needless to say the house sold after many viewings. You can stand in the corner of the room and you can see everything wall to wall. With a wide aperture the pictures are very slightly soft but still usable. Stop down one stop for great sharpness. Handheld indoor shots are no problems at slow shutter speeds at 10mm. Highly recommended.

I replaced a Jessops non-multicoated UV filter with this on my 18 - 135 Nikon / D80 combo and the difference was stunning. Better colour saturation and less ghosting, without causing vignetting because it is so thin. Everything looks less hazy. I'm even impressed by the comparison in price. and of course it protects the front element of my lens .
