I persisted with this book far longer than I should have - I could have been reading something worthwhile. Ploughed through to the half way point, expecting that something interesting must happen soon (no), not at all interested in what happened to any of the dull and one dimensional characters. I eventually skipped to the end to see what happened, which was what I was expecting. Saved myself a few hours and can now move onto something I might actually enjoy. Disappointing.

Like most readers who have reviewed this - I loved The House at Riverton and couldn't wait to read Forgotten Garden. My oh my - was she paid by the page? I found that it was really drawn out - too descriptive for my tastes (I like to use my imagination and don't want the author to explain what a tree looks like - thanks!) The writing wasn't up to the same standard and I had "guessed" the answer to the "mystery" well before the end. I also found the constant hopping around from London, Brisbane, Cornwall, 1907, 1913, 1975, 2005 (where are we now?) confusing and unnecessary. Being a pedant, it also annoyed me when Cassandra said she was looking through her "grandmother's scrapbooks" (Rose's) when actually Nell was her grandmother and Rose was ... Read More:

This is a cleaver, warm and at times shocking book. There are so many twists and turns that you just don't see coming. She makes the characters warm, likable and best of all believable. This is a rare gem and a must read.

This is a beautiful story, masterfully told. The plot and the way it is presented is exceptionally good. The characters are well drawn and believable, drawing the reader into events both past and present with a fascination to know the truth about what happened to Saffie and why.
Sara MacDonald's books follow a theme of switching from past events to present developments, and in this story she has as many as four different threads of the plot being followed at the same time. It works really well though, and does not confuse in any way, but instead it adds dimension and hooks the reader's interest.
This is a haunting tale which delves deeply into the mind and emotions, with a spiritual angle which to me felt totally natural and added depth and ... Read More:

Following the glowing reviews given by other readers, I disregarded the unappealing packaging to this book and gave it a try. Unfortunately, despite an interesting premise, what could have been a gripping and enjoyable read, turned out to be mediocre and predictable. Any twists or turns in the plot were ruined by heavy foreshadowing. I would be unlikely to read another book by this author.

At first this book was promising but it quickly deteriorated into a muddle of forgettable characters doing forgettable things.Very disappointing.

It's been highly entertaining reading the one- and two-star reviews of this book - poor saps all, lacking the basic human empathy or imagination to "get" the story of Lewis. Sadie Jones deserves all the plaudits she's received, because not only is this a note-perfect evocation of the time that happiness forgot, it's also brave, funny and bursting with characters. With the single exception of "Atonement" Ian McEwan has been living on borrowed time for years - Sadie Jones beats him into a cocked hat here. I can't wait for her next book.

This has been the first novel I have read by Sara MacDonald, and I just couldn't put the book down. I am an avid reader of all types of books, both fiction and non-fiction, but this book has to be one of the very best books I have read in years. The book is beautifully written by setting the scene in Cornwall, without boring you with too much detail. The characters are down to earth everyday people that you can relate to, and you feel so attached to, as you get more involved with the storyline. What I loved about the book was the unusual and unpredictable story, that kept me turning the pages till the early hours. I cannot wait to read the other books by Sara, and I would recommend this book to anybody looking for a brilliant read.

The journey begins with Lev's bus journey from his home in Poland to the loneliness of impersonal London. Lev is into his early forties, has recently lost his wife to cancer and believes that the only way that he can support his very young daughter and his mother is to find himself a job in London. His life-long friend, who supposedly knows such things, has told Lev that he should be able to get by in London on £20 a week. The truth becomes apparent within 24 hours of his arrival at Victoria Bus Terminus when he finds out how much it's going to cost for one night's B&B.

During the bus journey, Lev has struck up a friendship with a female teacher who already has good contacts in London. Throughout the book, this lady comes to Lev's rescue in times of trouble. ... Read More:

I actually just read this for the second time before posting a review and liked it slightly better than I did the first time. The writing's elegant but light and therefore easy to read but... I don't believe in Pippa Lee, she's not a real person, and if she were, she's not somebody I'd want to know. There's not really much of a plot, and what there is ties up far too conveniently at the end with none of the moral dilemma which would have made it interesting - although given Pippa's previous track record, there wouldn't have been much of a dilemma anyway. It's OK but doesn't hook you in emotionally, I can't believe they're making a film of it.
