Many people will have seen Matthew Fort on Great British Menu or read his Guardian columns over the years. His passion for food is totally infectious. And behind his affable demeanour is a sharp mind, wonderful eye for detail and delightfully involving use of language. On this journey around Sicily he also shows an awful lot of himself. It is a very personal journey. It shows not only a sense of the history of the places he visits, it also tells a lot about his own self; his family relationships, his strength of character, his willingness to engage anyone and everyone in his quest. You sense how hard such a journey is; the loneliness of several weeks on a scooter, the uncertainty of what you will find. This is a rare book as it is readable ... Read More:

Funny how this book makes you ponder the worth of buying an old Vespa, even though you know you won't It also makes you think seriously about buying a heap of Kinder Surprises. Dozens? Hundreds? Well enough to ensure you get one with a green Vespa in it.
The Italian turista lot should market this book, a great magnet to draw more tourists to the Italian countryside, although I suspect that job has been done already by Maye and co. This though, would make a better film than Maye's 'Under the Tuscan Sun'. It combines romance, roads, red wine and quirky characters. Reading it, on the other side of the world in July, is a good way to shake off the cold and drab winter. Dunno if I'll ever do the Vespa ride - I like modern engines that don't break ... Read More:

I like most people who like to cook own countless cookbooks. The best offer competent recipes, eloquently described and provide sound descriptions that clearly guide you through the process resulting in well cooked dishes. This is one of those books that as Simon Hopkinson describes should be stained from constant use.

As soon as I started to read it I knew I was on safe ground. From the meals for one through to a full blown dinner for eight. For those who aren't seduced by colour photography but admire the well turned phrase that moves a dish from being good to sublime then this is for you. No glossy heavy weight but a profoundly noble tome.

I loved the writing, I loved the illustrations and if my gut instincts are right I'll love ... Read More:

Thoroughly enjoyable read. I find Annie Hawes impressive in the extreme in that she really knows her subject and her reader! I loved my travels with her but sadly missed the de Giglio family and all her Italian friends. I learned an awful lot about women of Islam and how they cope with the extremes of this religion. Annie presents a book which is humourous and yet holds the dignity of the way of life and customs of the land she travels in.

I was at a friends and flicked through this book and began to drool! I scribbled down two recipes that night which I recreated that week. They were fantastic and I bought the book. Every single recipe screams 'Try me, you'll love me!' and I do.

I must say there were many times where I laughed out loud or smiled in relation to many things I do or eat and how they are quintessentially British. I also learned that I AM the 'oh-i-never-measure-anything cook.' The experience of reading this lovely book, however has been marred by every other page judging people for not going to local greengrocers and not supporting farmer's markets.

I may be lucky enough to afford (or just a good budgeter!) to eat organic/local/fairtrade and have time to shop 3 times a week instead of one big one (I'm a student) but I know of too many people who simply don't have the time, energy OR money to buy ethically all the time and they shouldn't be made to feel bad for this. I want Nigel, Hugh AND Jamie (3 men I love very much) to ... Read More:

I too, was misled by the title into thinking this would be everyday recipes, arranged by the seasons, but it turns out that 'Week in, week out' refers not to the cooking but to the writing of his weekly column in the Independent. Although there are 52 columns there are no headings and no very discernible order (starts with New Year, Christmas still being mentioned on p.67) so you can't easily find a recipe suitable for a particular time of year.

Although some of the recipes are very good, and the methods given are very thorough, this was spoilt for me as an enjoyable read by the sheer tetchiness of the author's tone. As the favourable review by Henrietta Green notes, he is 'dismissive of modern food fads'. Well, he seems to be dismissive of plenty of other things ... Read More:

This is not 'another cookbook'. It is a story of a renovation of a once pretty house into a rather lovely manoir. Beautifully written and illustrated. The book is a memory of happy times and some disastrous - normal problems which happen to anyone renovating in France. This is not just for francophiles but anyone who likes a good story and some wonderful recipes, which are easy to follow and delicious to eat. For gardeners, it has some wonderful ideas. It has to be on the Christmas wish list. Keep it on the kitchen table and when the winter is too much, have a little bit of France to cheer you up.

I read Narrow Dog to Carcassone which I found entertaining enough apart from the author's writing style which I found more and more impenetrable the more tired I got. It was fresh and intriguing though, enough to make me want to read the sequel and I'm glad I did.

This, to my mind is a much better book than its predecessor. I think the prose, although still unusual is less dense and full of allusion than previously which makes it much easier to read and follow. I liked the narrative and the stories of the people and wildlife were great.

The blurb makes much of the fact that Terry and Monica are pensioners. This might put some people off, but they do not write, act or think like seventy year olds as traditionally portrayed and this is an energetic, rude, funny book that ... Read More:
