Having read the House at Riverton and thought it okay, it was with a little trepidation that I picked up The Forgotten Garden, and all I can say is Wow,Wow, Wow what a wonderful web was woven, full of mysteries, twists, sadness, and a very unpredicted ending. I could not put this book down I took it on holiday and was gripped. There were times I had to retrace a chapter or two, just to confirm who was who, and was I going along the right track. Dear reader you will be wowed. The best moment in the book is the very last page, the epilogue, I found myself crying at the sadness, and also a feeling of loss at having come to the end of a most memorable book. One to be read again and again.

I didn't find this luring enough to keep my attention. I did enjoy the first 60 or so pages, but then I struggled to finish this book. Maybe it was a case of too many characters and a drawn out build up for me, because the actual story content seemed so promising.

I was disappointed with this book given the previous reviews. I found non of the characters engaging and the plot beyond predictable.

As the previous review, I found it hard to put down. The author has a way to transport the reader to the heart of the story.

This is not Mills and Boon - neither is it Hemmingway - it is a good summer read that deals with the minutiae of the lives of these women in India in the between wars period where catching a good husband meant everything.

Don't expect too much and you will be surprised how much you want to turn the page !

This is such an amazingly original story with a uniquely complex plot - a heartwrenching tragedy, a dull marriage which ultimately holds immense possibilities - and Adam the boy catalyst. A brilliant mix of situations, wholesome characters - just unique. Sara Macdonald shows sheer brilliance in this. Why are her books so difficult to purchase? Why so few in publication? Read it. It's a MUST.

Although the book gets off to a confusing start and there are a lot of characters to get to grips with (I went back and read Part 1 when I had read Part 2) this is a really thought provoking book. It's good to read a character driven story that acknowledges that some people are interested in history and politics as well as romance and family saga. It's a fascinating insight into Britain in the 1930s as well as a good story.

Sadie Jones's moving story of young Lewis's struggle with the emotional crippling delivered by family events and (quoting another review) "communal failure to take responsibility for a troubled child" is both absorbing and beautifully written, without any sentimentality. I was a child in the 1950s, it's hard to believe that Sadie Jones wasn't there as well! Her evocation of the period is admirable and inaccuracies of detail are minimal (eg British police cars had bells not sirens, and a girl would have worn stretch slacks not jeans) and certainly don't detract. The parallel and horrifying portrayal of the Carmichael family is entwined with that of Lewis to such an degree that the reader alternately hopes for and dreads the resolution of Lewis and Kit's ... This book is two stories, which eventually become entwined into one. One story is about a woman living in a farmhouse in Italy. You find out how her life changed after the war and the memories she tried to forget about a personal tragedy. The other story is about a group of English 'friends' staying in a secluded building in the Italian countryside trying to find answers for the tragic death of someone close to them. Each story has one character from whose point of view we see the proceedings, whose memories we observe and whose communications with the other characters allow us to see how the past tragedies have effected each of these characters as individuals.

The descriptions of the surroundings are vivid, whether they are describing the peaceful Italian ... Read More:

This has been the first novel I have read by Sara MacDonald, and I just couldn't put the book down. I am an avid reader of all types of books, both fiction and non-fiction, but this book has to be one of the very best books I have read in years. The book is beautifully written by setting the scene in Cornwall, without boring you with too much detail. The characters are down to earth everyday people that you can relate to, and you feel so attached to, as you get more involved with the storyline. What I loved about the book was the unusual and unpredictable story, that kept me turning the pages till the early hours. I cannot wait to read the other books by Sara, and I would recommend this book to anybody looking for a brilliant read.
