Although the book gets off to a confusing start and there are a lot of characters to get to grips with (I went back and read Part 1 when I had read Part 2) this is a really thought provoking book. It's good to read a character driven story that acknowledges that some people are interested in history and politics as well as romance and family saga. It's a fascinating insight into Britain in the 1930s as well as a good story.

This will have been the last time I bought a Katie Fforde novel as hardback edition. Its predictable plot was not worth the extra expenditure and the sugary, dove-eyed cover illustration made we want to hide it. It really is a shame, but maybe I'm growing out of books like these.

I thoroughly enjoyed this old fashioned, friendly, life affirming story. It all worked out in the end as it should if that isn't too much of a spoiler. I read it quickly and happily, immediately passing it to my mother who I knew would enjoy the puzzles, personalities and pictures painted in perfect prose.

A charming, enjoyable book with a thoughtful slant on morals and kindness. The slips between two time periods were handled proficiently and without jarring. For me it was a relaxing, happy read with much to feel at home with. I live near the area and the descriptions of the lanes, villages and people were all well drawn. Not a book to discuss at length but one to pass on to a friend with the knowledge that you are giving them a treat.

Katie Fforde is in my opinion one of the better writers of `chick lit' This is her thirteenth novel and I admit to having read most of them, as her writing has always been enjoyable when I feel the need for some romantic escapism. However I was disappointed with this one as it even lacked a plot just a typical theme, take two very different women Jo and Dora, both sworn off men until they fall for the charms of Marcus and Tom. Neither of the romances felt convincing either, just all rather predictable. I also found more than a few of the comments and use of words irritating such as the over use of `perimenopausal' I think we got the message. As for the description on p114 when Dora was changing for the karaoke did we really need to know about `stray armpit ... Read More:

I didn't find this luring enough to keep my attention. I did enjoy the first 60 or so pages, but then I struggled to finish this book. Maybe it was a case of too many characters and a drawn out build up for me, because the actual story content seemed so promising.

Upon starting the book I quickly found I could not put it down. I immediately liked the characters and found the story entertaining and realistic with potential for a real story. Towards the end came a twist which I felt helped to explain the actions of the husband and I looked forward to how this issue would be addressed. However I could not believe how quickly the ending came! It was as if the author had suddenly had enough of writing and wrapped up the several plot lines in the last chapter. I would have liked to have seen the husband explain the reasons for his leaving in the first place or at least an element of remorse for his actions. There is no mention of his mistress, or even his final relationship with his wife. A shame because I finished the book feeling ... Read More:

I don't even know where to start in reviewing this book. I can't quite remember when a book drew me in and kept my attention for the duration of the novel like this one did. It was a long book but it was so engrossing I read it within a couple of days, I literally couldn't put it down. It was absolutely magical. Well done Kate Morton!

The story begins in 1913 with a very little girl who lands in Australia apparently without any history, even to the extent of not remembering her own name, only that a lady called 'the Authoress' is supposed to be looking after her and she has disappeared. She is taken in by the harbour master and his family and when no one comes forward to claim her they decide to keep her and call her Nell. Nell settles into the family so ... Read More:
