Read this book whilst on holiday in Liguria - quite appropriate considering this is the subject of this outstanding novel by Annie Hawes. It tells the tale of an English woman who has relocated to a little cottage in the hills above Diano Marina, just along the coast from Imperia, in the charmingly un-exploited region of Liguria, Italy. Superbly written, very funny and, as I can personally attest, and accurate portrayal of Ligurian life. This is one of the 'happiest' books I've read in a long time. Thoroughly recommended.

I have loved all the Annie Hawes novels, and was eagerly awaiting this one. It didn't disappoint - another charming read and can't wait for the next one.

None of the characters from the previous books appear, but the formula is the same - entertaining stories about travel and food in an interesting foreign place - this time North Africa.

As an aside, I brought this to read on a camping holiday in France, and the stories about North African food were so appealing that we cooked couscous and spicy stew three times in our two weeks on the campsite.

Highly recommend Casablanca Cuisine if you fancy having a go at recreating some of the culinary adventures yourself.

what a lovely read this is, nicely suprising & not at all like the usual "year in a foreign country" type stuff. The stories of the Ligurian way of thinking "no swimming in the sea except in the height of summer - this brings on Flu"......"germans who horror of horror drink wine WITHOUT FOOD!!! GASP GASP"...."bottled wine is akin to poison & not even made from grapes".......Its also interesting that this was set many many years ago...before we all ate olive oil/sundried tomatoes/olives/tomatoes on the vine etc etc as a matter of course....funny & laigh out loud...i have since bought her next book & will be enjoying that very soon

I have just finished reading this book for the 3rd time, and am sure I will be reading it again soon. Adamoli is a great writer and you really feel as though you are in the beautiful seaside village with her. You are there when she discovers it, and you are there years later when the tourist trade is taking over.
She also has a little reciepe at the start of each chapter which is a nice idea! If you love reading books about Italy but are sick of the 'Under the Tuscan Sun' type books then this is for you!

The third book in the "lemons" series does not disappoint, although the book has a break from the familiar stories of the Orgiva locals in the middle of the book - I believe Chris wants to steer further into the direction of travel writing so I would assume this will be the last book of the series.. but I have visited the area around Orgiva and there is plenty to write about.

I find chris's writing humourous and friendly which is what makes the stories and characters so likeable.

Experience the adventure of exploring one's family roots in a small village in southern Italy: taste the food, kiss the relatives, explore the terrain, climb the mountains, visit the castles, learn the history (Greeks, Bruttians, Romans, Visigoth conquests) ... The village, Gimigilano, is located in Calabria, the region that looks like the foot on a map of Italy, which everyone knows resembles a boot. The author, Mark Rotella, describes his very *first* visit to this village with his father and later subsequent visits either alone or with his wife, who is of Engish and Dutch heritage. He captivates the reader with descriptions of nostalgia and heart-felt longing when he emotionally connects to the traditions, customs and life of the village. He is befriended ... Read More:

I really found this book self-absorbed and trivial and therefore incredibly annoying. If you know anything at all about beautiful, interesting Tuscany it adds nothing further to your experience or understanding, and if you don't know the place then it gives you nothing either. It's not well-written and the writer makes inexcusable and elementary errors of Italian. Of all the many "ex-pat living the simple life in the Mediterranean" books on the market this is not one that I can say has anything at all to recommend it. I would give it 0 stars if I could.

"Desiring Italy" became my inseparable travelling companion across Italy, after I found it by chance at a Roman bookstore. Not only it suggests special places to visit that are not always listed in traditional guides, it also makes them alive through their portrayal by literary masters (all women) that add their elegance, their sensitivity, their intelligence to that of the readers'. An added bonus was that I got to make their literary works real in my mind by following the steps of the characters in these magnificent settings (as Dorothea in "Middlemarch", for example).

This series is far more than a tourist trap - particularly as guide Francesco da Mosto would rather there were less visitors to his city (to buy less fake glass/carnival masks/plastic gondolas/jester hats)! Francesco is charming, witty and wonderfully insouciant as he presents an informative yet dramatic history of Venice, La Serenissima. He acknowledges its past arrogance and mistakes, whilst laughing at some of the more bizarre traditions (even he isn't sure about the election of the doges), but all the while maintains an awed respect for the stunning architecture and art, engineering and endurance of his home; Francesco is proud to be Venetian, and I only wish I could share the honour.

Tim Parks has a habit of writing on subjects I'm fascinated by - Italy, football, education - so it's a bit odd that I tend to find his books hard-going and uninspiring. A Season in Verona seemed to me the work of a man who had no real enthusiasm for football, and Italian Neighbours reads like the diatribe of a bitter foreigner against a Veneto suburb and its inhabitants.

I believe Parks is trying to write an antidote to those travel books that come over all misty-eyed about sunsets in Tuscany, and so on - and I'm all for that. But there's no balance here: the book goes into considerable detail (it is 30-40% overlong) about the numerous petty annoyances of life in Italy, but has very little to say about what makes the Veneto, or its people, interesting. As one reviewer ... Read More:
