I am really interested in the Mitford Sisters so I have been really looking forward to getting this book. It was much bigger than I expected but was very enjoyable. I admit that I got a bit bored with all the footnotes and about half-way through just started to ignore them unless I was really confused. Through the letters you get to see life from their many different perspectives, it really made me think of the relationship that I have with my own sister and the many times that we have seen the same situation in very different ways. I would recommend this book to people even if they are not a fan of the Mitfords- it gives a really good insight into that period of history.

Alan Bennett has discovered a latent royalist tendency with this little gem, Her Majesty being portrayed as, in this one respect at least - a reader, nay devourer of books, whatever next - just like us. It won't do, can't be allowed actually. I chuckled and chortled and laughed out loud and was cheering every successful subterfuge. It's a book that makes you feel good.

This is a great, multi-faceted book, glittering with details of Virginia Woolf's class-cluttered mind but also an intimate exploration to home life for rich and poor women throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Provides among other things a thoughtful and thought-provoking look at how individual freedom often depends on the oppression of others: bohemian feminist Virginia Woolf and her lasting work comes to us courtesy of a crack team of wives...

so quickly as he learned . I mean , at first he couldnt even speak but after a short time he was fluent in the language already ?

I love reading and frequently devour a book a day on holiday. I've recently had ample time to read after a holiday and recuperation from an operation. This was probably my favourite book out of all the ones I've read in that time. The openness of the women was surprising for the period, for instance how they thought you could conceive a girl rather than a boy. It was an eye opener and I could see how my Grand Parents may have lived. I've lent this book to my Mum and hope she enjoys it as much as I did. A really lovely read and I would recommend to anyone who is interested in people and/or period books.

I eagerly awaited the arrival of this book..... and then struggled to make myself finish it.

The facts of the case of interesting but the book is massively padded out with all manner of facts on victorian life and morals which I found very boring and tedious.

I thought I had bought a really gripping true crime story but I can't believe the author managed to make a whole book out of this.

I really hate not finishing a book so I made my way to the end.... and then wished I hadn't bothered. The book went straight in the box for the charity shop I'm afraid. Dull dull dull!

No-one could fault the time and effort that have gone into producing this extensive work but the sheer volume of facts, figures and comments might well prove mind-numbing to the average reader and certainly led to me - who can just remember the period in question - losing interest and scanning through pages looking for the essence amongst innumerable details. A great resource for a student of the times but not for those seeking a general account of these important years.

I write this in late 2008 as the global financial system goes into meltdown and the credit crunch is really biting into our individual pockets. What Nella Last would make of our sickeningly materialistic, wasteful, 'spend spend spend' times I cannot imagine!
On a domestic level we could all learn a lot from Nella's money-saving, waste-avoiding methods. Her descriptions of the meals she contrives are fascinating, and her make-do-and-mend philosophy would put us all to shame.
Aside from the domestic detail, Nella writes movingly about her thoughts and feelings as a wife and mother living through a second war, and especially about the changing role of women and her own sense of liberation through war work.
This should be be required reading for everyone lucky enough to have ... Read More:

If you enjoyed the original 'Nella Last's War' then you will enjoy this second volume just the same. The end of hostilities doesn't mean the end of either Nella's writing, or her talent with words and observation. It also certainly does not mean the end of hardship and difficulty. I drove to Barrow on the strength of the first diary and was very fortunate to meet the present owners of Nella's old house - they actually bought it off the Last family forty years ago. Just sitting in her old living room, where all those words had poured onto the page, brought Nella and her time tangibly closer. I heartily recommend this book.

I got this book to read while on holiday and i have to say that i had it read within the first to days. I couldnt put it down! from the first page i was desperate to find out what happened to Lewis.

Lewis, the main character, is not the average hero of a novel as he is difficult to like and is troubled but when you start reading about his life and what he goes through you cannot help but feel symptathy for him. His hopeless father and his step mother who tried far to hard. While this is a very disturbing read as all of the characters have their own troubles in the book, the story captivates the reader and dosent let go until well after the last page has been read.

i strongly recommend this read, it is uplifting and makes people believe that love can win through even ... Read More:
