This is a big book in volume as well as content being over 500 pages long but Oxford historian Robin Lane Fox has contrived to make it interesting for the reader from beginning to end. Many facts have been written about Alexander over the years, some true, some doubtful and much that is pure speculation. This in turn has given Alexander a mythical quality, bordering on god like proportions.

The author's writing style is both concise and lucid with no pretensions to the fact that he is the master and the reader by his very nature is the pupil. In a nutshell the author writes for everyone not just the scholar. This book is for anyone with an interest in the life and times of Alexander. The author progresses through the life of Alexander ... As someone whose knowledge of Roman History was limited to Julius Caesar, Hadrian's Wall and the mistaken belief that the "Lays of Ancient Rome" was a report on the early history of prostitution, I read this book having seen the odd episode of the series on TV. What a pleasure it was to learn just how much we owe to the Romans and how salutary to know how little has changed after 2000 years. Wealth remains the key to power, power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. While humankind in pursuit of power invoke dieties they are but smokescreens to cover their own selfish ambition, greed and egotism. History is written by the victorious and what has been interpreted as history is constantly rewritten by new generations from a different perspective. ... Read More:

It has to be said: this book is rather densely written. However, the information it contains is fascinating and dedicated readers will find rich reward.

I've been interested in this period of the history for a while but never found a book good enough to explain all the events. This book is thoroughly researched, scholarly yet written in a style and language easy to follow. A couple of reviewers have put foward the point that this book is more about the rise of the barbarians than the fall of the Roman empire. I'm afraid this is not correct as the two are inextricably intertwined. This book comes with the highest recommendation.

I started reading this as a complete physics novice. Having heard about the Large Hadron collider at CERN and the experiments that were due to begin in 2008, I wanted to be able to grasp the basics of what those scientists were hoping to achieve, and gain a better insight into cosmology more generally. But I had absolutely zero physics understanding, and the most I knew about Newton was that there was an apple that supposedly dropped on his head - something to do with gravity! I didn't really know what special or general relativity were, or even that these were two separate discoveries. I'd seen the odd TV documentary proposing something called superstring, and speculation about wormholes and time travel. There was also something called quantum physics, to do with very small particles, ... Read More:

The first 70-100 pages form the start of an interesting and entertaining essay- however the book does not close on many of the promises made in the opening chapters. For example, many references are made to the impossibility of defining a singular English identity- certainly true enough. However, the book gradually builds into a sustained focus on 'the breed' (read traditional stereotype of a Public School educated Englishman from the Home Counties). There are ample opportunities to reject further discussion of this tired stereotype but few are given more than lip service. This book may be interesting for some and opens with some interesting observations, however it fails to materialise as a coherent comment on the diverse English people.

Its not too much of an exageration to say that this book is an oversight of 20th century usa. Alistair Cooke's letter is something i came too only a few years before his death and this book goes through from the 40s right until his last letter.

The quality of writing is superb of a man at the cutting edge of history.

A fantastic, informative book, although lacking in religious discourse which formed much of ancient egyptian life. However, a marvellous reference book all the same. Would have been better in a larger format as difficult to read at times.

Like all good history books, this brings the past to life with a vengeance. Unlike some of Johnson's newspaper columns, this is well-written, full of insight and made me think again about all things Roman and how the legacy of Rome is still with us some two millennia later.
