In 1593, the brilliant playwright Christopher Marlowe was stabbed to death in a tavern brawl in Deptford, London. The official record stated that this row was over the bill, or "recknynge". The truth, believes Nicholl, is much darker: a murder, by the shadowy agents of the Elizabethan secret service.

Nicholl's investigation rarely concerns itself with the playwright or his texts, instead beginning with the three men present at Marlowe's death. Ingram Frizer was a swindler and a loan-shark, who admitted the stabbing but claimed self-defense, and was acquitted with unusual, probably suspicious, speed just weeks later. Nicholas Skeeres was a government intelligence agent, probably paid by the Earl of Essex or his faction. And Robert ... Read More:

I eagerly awaited the arrival of this book..... and then struggled to make myself finish it.

The facts of the case of interesting but the book is massively padded out with all manner of facts on victorian life and morals which I found very boring and tedious.

I thought I had bought a really gripping true crime story but I can't believe the author managed to make a whole book out of this.

I really hate not finishing a book so I made my way to the end.... and then wished I hadn't bothered. The book went straight in the box for the charity shop I'm afraid. Dull dull dull!

I really enjoyed this book. It was a quick and easy read, admittedly, but it does not bill itself as a Shakepeare textbook or biography and would be a different animal if it was. If you take it at face value, it's a fun read, helped along by Bryson's amusing style.

"With the passing of the years Shakespeare has too often been isolated from his fellows. He is the greatest of them, but he would not have been what he is without them." -- so says Stanley Wells at the conclusion of what is a wonderfully readable look at the theatrical scene of Shakespeare's day. Concentrating on the Bard's contemporaries rather than the man himself (more than adequately covered elsewhere), Shakespeare & Co is accessible rather than academic (though by no means lightweight), and an excellent introduction to those figures who hover on the edges of Shakespeare's biography, all too undeservingly like like bit-players in somebody else's drama. Individual chapters cover the theatrical scene (how plays were put together and presented, how they fit into the political mood ... Read More:

Where here the blunt Aussie frankness that Germaine Greer has celebrated and been respected for all of her life?
When writing history, it is sometimes almost acceptable to now and then fill in gaps by positing things to make sense of an action, but this disingenuous offering is the worst `history' book I have ever read in that it is 99% conjecture - positing - and 1% truism.
After 400 pages we know exactly nothing more about Shakespeare or his wife, than we did - than anybody did - before. Using highly irritating devices like: `if... we might suppose... it is not inconceivable... I would argue...' etc. ad nauseam, Greer attempts to create a woman whom she can find sympathy with, for no other reason than to defend her against the criticisms of other historians who clearly know ... Alan Bennett has discovered a latent royalist tendency with this little gem, Her Majesty being portrayed as, in this one respect at least - a reader, nay devourer of books, whatever next - just like us. It won't do, can't be allowed actually. I chuckled and chortled and laughed out loud and was cheering every successful subterfuge. It's a book that makes you feel good.

What an excellent Tudor mystery - Sansom really brings Tudor life 'back to life'! If you enjoy grizzly murder mysteries with twists and turns then this is for you. It is well up to the standard of the previous 3 Shardlake novels and we can only hope the fourth one will not be too long in arriving! Read and enjoy - one to immerse onself in on a cold winter night!

I can't comment on the book since I returned it immediately. Amazon must have had this lying around in a filthy warehouse: it arrived filthy with top and bottom spine well bashed and the wrap-around (with the boat drawing) well worn. All credit to Amazon though that their returns process is excellent. I notice that in the 10 days since I bought it, Amazon have increased the price by 10p! Unusual for old stock (the hardback is obviously out of print)! Anyway, if you think you've sourced the hardback version at a good price, maybe think again. I'm off to pay more at Borders, but at least I know I'm getting a pristine copy.
