It is very easy to lament the work done by Bomber Command in the mid to end years of the Second World War in Europe. This book does just that. But it also delves into the hearts of those who flew the bombers, the emotions of those who let loose the bomb doors, the feelings of those who shot at night-fighters. And the book's great achievement is in presenting a view that not only helps us understand the great personal sacrifice these men made, but the even greater emotional sacrifice they have suffered since the end of the war.
With some glaring grammatical mistakes, the book's editors should be sacked, but all in all, this is a highly endearing yet incisive account of one of the ugliest aspects of war, yet an aspect that greatly hastened ... Read More:

If you like adventure then you can't go far wrong with this book. During World War II, petty East End criminal Eddie Chapman finds himself banged up in occupied Jersey's prison. He is given a lifeline that he cannot refuse - come and work for German secret intelligence as a spy or face the consequences. Eddie opts for the former and is thrown into the grandiose world of a German spymaster. Now he is faced with the moral dilemma of double-crossing his country or the gamble of double crossing his new found boss. You'll have to read the book to find out which choice he makes ... I thoroughly recommend this book!

I was given this book by an ex WW2 POW, 89 years of age who spent nearly five years in three prison camps in the Silesia area of Poland. I agreed to ghostwrite his book after listening to his incredible story. "Do The Birds Still Sing in Hell?" will be released by Libros International around September 2008. This book provided invaluable research and along with the first hand accounts from my 'old soldier' Horace Greasley, I began to build up a picture of the hell that these unsung heroes went through. These men were little forgotten during WW2, an unfortunate statistic compiled by various governments and occassionally supported from time to time by the Red Cross and delegates from Geneva to see that the rules to their 'convention' were being upheld. They weren't. ... Read More:

I struggled through the prologue, fearing a book stuffed of the same old cliches, to be pleasantly surprised at having discovered a real gem of a book.

By extensive use of personal contemporary accounts of those actually involved in the fighting, Patrick Bishop succeeds in peeling back the romantic veneer surrounding the aircrew to reveal the harsh reality of their existence in the long, hot Summer of 1940 - the dread of hearing the dispersal telephone ring, the terror & confusion of the dogfight and the utter exhaustion brought about by unrelenting action are laid bare for all to see.

This book doesn't set out to make heroes of the RAF pilots involved in the country's defence in 1940 but it does show the extraordinary job done by these ... Read More:

really enjoyed the book. Just makes you think how we take our armed forces personal for granted. Truly remarkable story.

I was a little disappointed with this book. I bought it thinking it would be as good a read as 'Armageddon' by the same author. But here I was wrong. It seems that the author has tried to fill up a long book rather quickly without paying too much attention to the overall readability. He does cover the Japanese point of view too, which is interesting but I think he has included too many personal interviews with survivors. It must be fascinating for someone who lived through it all, who can piece it all together today - but I was left a little confused and just about managed to finish reading the book. Not easy reading.

Disappointing. Patch's own words are fine, especially for a man of his age, but the ghost-writer (Richard van Emden) is too intrusive and spoils the flow of the narrative.

Undoutedly thoroughly researched but ultimately a dissapointing read. The text gets bogged down in minutiae at the expense of the bigger picture making it difficult to retain the readers' attention. A somewhat confused presentation of the chronology of events does not help matters either.

I am not a huge fan of the sort of military history books that concentrate on strategy and campaigns without showing what war is really like on a human level. It's the stories people tell that catch the imagination and help us to remember what war was really like for those involved in the fighting. Rod Bailey has searched the Imperial War Museum's archives to uncover and weave together some fascinating narratives from people who operated behind enemy lines all over the world during the Second World War. If you enjoy reading first-hand accounts of adventure and bravery and want to understand the thoughts and feelings, hopes and fears of ordinary people doing extraordinary things in wartime then I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Bailey has committed to print some of the most fascinating ... Read More:
