Unlike many of Chomsky's other political books this one is somewhat easier to read and the points it gets across are lucidly put
It is also short and would make an excellent introduction to his work and ideas

Baghdad Year Zero, by Naomi Klien, is the first of three sections to this short, no-holds-barred, account of the truth behind the spin.

Much comment, even from supporters of the Iraq War, has focussed on how the coalition lost the peace. Accepted mythology has it that the allies had no plan of action: they assumed they would be made welcome, but the ungrateful Iraqis had other ideas.

This book explains why. Bush and his NeoCon Junta had a plan for postwar Iraq which involved a giant experiment in NeoCon theory. Iraq would be the first country in the world to be rebuilt by private enterprise, US corporation style. McDonalds and Wal Mart would enter Iraq, and the population would enjoy burgers, and slap their buttocks in delight ... Read More:

A copy of this book should be put in the hands of every man, woman, child, cat and dog on the planet. We are being drowned in a sea of rolling news, breaking news, 'keeping you updated', etc etc - and it's all crap. Many of us knew the news has been distorted for years, but as Nick Davies proves the modern media can now only produce hogwash (actually, that's an insult to hogwash). At a time when we need a proper Fourth Estate we get junk. There are faults with the book: it's probably overlong and the author mentions only in passing that PR is full of journalists, most of whom would work for whoever pays them and say what they're paid to. But enough of that. That modern news is hype, hysteria and hopeless is proved beyond doubt in page after page of ... Read More:

This is one of those books that preaches to the converted. There are many unspoken assumptions used within the books (commerce = bad, risk=bad, regulation=good, profit=evil).
If you agree with them it's fine, but you can see some significant examples of double standards in terms of challenging sources (believing lefty people more than righty people).

Some good points, but overall quite difficult to read if you don't agree with the authors' original viewpoint.

The Dome, the lottery, the Scottish Parliament, the Manchester tram scam, the destruction of the railways and London Underground: these are all scandals we know about and which make us think the lunatics are running the asylum. We feel bewildered disempowered, ripped off and plain scared for the future of our country and the world.

None of these episodes is covered in this book. Yet through its coverage of the Skye Bridge, the Coventry hospitals, the “regeneration” of Southampton, genetic engineering in agriculture and medicine, the takeover of our universities - and much, much more it explains everything about the decline in quality of life, accelerating gap between rich and poor, and the total destruction of anything remotely resembling ... Interested in human rights? Interested in finding out about what some "democratic" governments can do and get away with doing when people just don't know? Well then stop what you are doing, go to your library or book shop and get this book.

In 'Freedom Next Time', Pilger details five harrowing accounts of appalling, shameful and disgraceful human right abuses: Diego Garcia, Palestine, South Africa, Afghanistan and India.

The abuses are systematic and on a grand scale. They reflect problems of governance and the pernicious consequence of mass ignorance which facilitates either bad action or inaction. He chronicles each account by first explaining the particulars of the background of the problem and then presenting the details of his own very thorough ... Read More:

This collection of Professor Chomsky's hard-hitting essays, previously published in newspapers world-wide during the period 2002-2008, includes persuasive pieces on Iraq, Iran, the 'war on terror', the Israeli invasion of Lebanon, US domestic issues and the failures of the George W Bush administration.
It's disgraceful that Noam Chomsky, one of the world's leading intellectuals, is treated as a pariah in his own country but these clearly argued essays brilliantly illuminate the post-9/11 world and deserve to have the widest possible readership.

Failed States is Professor Noam Chomsky's latest state of the nation address, a critical snapshot of where the United States is right now.

The approach he takes is that 'Failed States' is a phrase used within the U.S. establishment to justify certain exercises of power, from financially supporting opponents of failed states, to regime change and invasion. 'Failed states', like 'rogue states' and 'states of concern' before it, is a vague term, perhaps deliberately so but Chomsky identifies some defining features of a failed state, among them, a failure to adequately protect its citizens from terrorism, a failure to provide reasonable health care for all, regardless of an ability to pay, a tendency to break international law and act regardless of treaties and conventions, a lack ... I originally bought this book last year, I read about half of it but gave up in disgust at the general pretentiousness and repetition.
I picked it up again this year after the credit crunch had hit and it seemed to be a different book, funny with some insight into current market turmoil! Assuming the book hadn't changed while on my shelf, presumably I had.

The core idea is very simple, Gaussian (Normal/ bell curves) distributions are overused in finance and they critically underestimate the chances of high impact relatively rare events which are best modelled as Power laws (see the The Long Tail: How Endless Choice is Creating Unlimited Demand for another take). Taleb covers the slightly strange beat where finance/ statistics/ epistemology (Philosophy of Knowledge) meet. The only ... Read More:

This book has an incredibly original take on culture, religion and national politics which attempts to elucidate the foundations upon which today's thought, political rhetoric and beliefs stand.

I will keep this review short and simply say that you do not need a guidebook to take you through his ideas - his writing is clear and compelling. This takes you on a journey through history looking at how ideas of social idealism, utopianism, action, intervention etc. have "developed" (or perhaps "changed" might be a more appropriate term). Implications for today's world are clear in each word, but are drawn out skillfully throughout the book. This should be of interest to anybody interested in social issues from international/ cultural conflict to language, politics to philosophy.

This is one ... Read More:
