as other reviewers have said about other books in penguin's great journey series, this book is basically a collection of random extracts from the original. it's annoying because the pieces they extract, though interesting enough, lack the context they would have had in the original. for example, at one point he recounts the history of the war between the greeks and the persians, but halfway through his account they just stop and move onto a different passage. i assume if i'd bought the original i would have been able to read the whole account, which i would have liked. i wish i hadn't bought this, and had instead bought herodotus's original, the histories. if you look hard enough you would probably be able to find a cheap enough copy on amazon ... I really enjoyed this book, particularly Bird's pony-bound adventures in the Colorado Territory at a time when it was only notionally under the control of the American authorities. The cover is another design winner from Penguin, it is beautifully illustrated by Victoria Sawdon - has anyone got any more info on her? Its great.

Penguin is evidently looking for ways to re-market the classics - an exercise in modern marketing. Just as Orwell's "Fighting in Spain" (no. 18 in the series) is in merely an abridged version of "Homage to Catalonia", Chekhov's "Journey to the End of the Russian Empire" is compiled from "Extract from A Life in Letters" and "The Island: A Journey to Sakhalin." Spend the money on the originals.
