A fantastic read! I've recommended it everyone I know, and have now starting reading the rest of Patrick Gale's books. Rough Music is also excellent.

I've read a lot of the other reviews posted and this book seems pretty divisive - not what I expected. I personally loved it - I sobbed through the final chapters. It delivered on everything I expected. I'd call it truly an epic, one I will go back to read again and again. The different strands of the story are very carefully and patiently woven together. The characters are very skillfully portrayed - I felt so much tenderness for Leo's father. In all, this story was so very moving and beautifully written. Those 1 star reviewers must have hearts of made of granite!

I found this book very hard going. Not one of my best reads. The story of a man who returns to his parents Czech homeland. Here he discovers the story of his Mothers true love during the war. Very sad and touching in places, and lots of references to the war. I only really enjoyed the last section of the book.

Quite simply I gave this book top marks because it gave such a clear and shocking insight into the DR Congo. Before reading this book I had not been aware of how depraved and destroyed this country is and has continued to be for so long. Whilst outside countries continue to pillage this wonderful country it will remain one of the most saddest stories of world history. The fact that most of the wildlife has now been destroyed across this country gives a good indication of how desperate the people's lives have become. Thank you Tim. Good luck people of DR Congo.

This is a magnificent story of the plight of women in Afghanistan, both before, during and after the Taliban. It traces the story of Mariam and Laila, both from very different background, but both finding themselves living without freedom, with constant violence and with nothing but their love for one another and the dream of a better life to keep them going.

Books such as this are essential reading because so many of us are ignorant to the every day lives of people living in a war torn country such as Afghanistan. We hear about the victims of regimes, but when you look at stories in newsprint, or hear them on TV whilst you are eating a good dinner, or living your comfortable life, they can be distant. This book, despite it being fiction, allows you to see ... Read More:

This book is only receiving good reviews by people who think that they 'should' like it...because McEwan wrote it- rather like anything that is written by Rowling.
This is a terrible book. It is over-sentimental, and the characters are not at all like real people. Why pick 1962? Why pick two main characters that no-one can identify with?
Read just the first and last page, and you know the story, the rest is Balderdash and Piffle.

I got this book to read while on holiday and i have to say that i had it read within the first to days. I couldnt put it down! from the first page i was desperate to find out what happened to Lewis.

Lewis, the main character, is not the average hero of a novel as he is difficult to like and is troubled but when you start reading about his life and what he goes through you cannot help but feel symptathy for him. His hopeless father and his step mother who tried far to hard. While this is a very disturbing read as all of the characters have their own troubles in the book, the story captivates the reader and dosent let go until well after the last page has been read.

i strongly recommend this read, it is uplifting and makes people believe that love ... Read More:

Due to the acclaims given to this novel, I expected something truly unique; especially due to the interesting narrative - death. However, I couldn't be more disappointed if I tried.

I have read my fair share of books and I am also currently studying Nazi Germany, so I have some insight into Germany around the time in the novel. Before I delved into this book, I thought it sounded incredibly interesting; the narrative was different, the setting and date was at a time of interest and the mystery seemed to be lurking from the synopsis on the back. However, instead of feeling like I was connecting with the characters and enjoying the story line, I felt like I was being taught a History lesson into Nazi Germany all over again.

Now don't get me wrong, Zusak's ... Read More:

I enjoyed reading this book. It is well written, original and funny at times. I would not say it is unforgettable but a good holiday read. Contrary to some other readers I really warmed up to Pippa.

'What Was Lost' is Catherine O'Flynn's debut award-winning novel, which tells the story of Kate Meaney who mysteriously goes missing in 1984 and the resonance this has when, some twenty years later, she reappears on a CCTV camera in Green Oaks Shopping Centre. The novel considers the butterfly effect of Kate's disappearance on the lives of Kurt, a security guard, and Lisa, a shop manager, who in 2004 find themselves trapped in unfulfilling roles at Green Oaks. This is the stage where the story's drama unfolds and the common denominator between all the characters and sub-stories within the novel - all the losses relate to the shopping centre and the retail future its represents at the expense of a previous way of life.

The novel opens in 1984, with the narrative painting the world ... Read More:
