The quality and of writing of "The Leopard" was, for me, perfect. And this bearing in mind it was a translation from Italian. With the exception of the recent nasty (American-English) trend of using "what" rather than "that which", it was English at its best. I would like to read it in Italian some day, but at my level, this would have been hard work. It was just a shame it was not longer. I could see the point of the 20 year gap in the story but it would have been so much more interesting if it had been a continuous story. However, bearing in mind that as one of the few that found "The Grapes of Wrath" one of the most disappointing books I ever read (talk about "The Kings New Clothes", I will never understand why everyone raves about the manufactured ... I agree with Michael Bruno - You've started the case very well, Michael. The DVD version should be avoided at all costs-the original tv version is the only way to see "Eboli", believe me (*and Michael) - The DVD is total rubbish - one (significant) hour truncated from the original - well DUHHH - is there anyone there who could intelligenly take this moronity - we're talking about one of the great works of the twentieth century - only Heimat's in the same league -

Vitttorini slowly introduces us to the strange and alternate view held by the sicilian emigre and the powerful and often fanciful and revitionist hold the "family" and concepts of home hold over those that have left these both behind in the search for something better. More a travel journal than a novel the book and its author descend slowly into the emotional morass that any homecoming creates, leaving us the reader, struggling with the allegory of a place that has changed beyond understanding and yet as Lampedusa says in The Leopard where, "everytrhing has changed and everything has stayed the same"

There are two things you need to know about this book. Firstly, it is a (literally) shocking expose about the power, reach, spread and influence of the Comorra, the Naples mafia. It names names, it gives details. It's staggering. It's also laughable in places - when he recounts how a lot of the younger mafiosi can no longer shoot straight, because they'er copying how they hold guns in the movies and rap videos, and the capo who builds himself an copy of Tony Montana's villa.

But the second thing you need to know is that it's really badly written. I don't know if it's the original or the translation - maybe both - but the prose is breathless and florid. Passages need to be read and reread to understand what he's going on about. There are sections ... Read More:

I know people bandy the word 'masterpiece' about a bit too freely on here - but this truly is one. I saw this film when it was first released years ago and remember being deeply moved by it. 20 plus years has not diminished the impression it made on me. It is a heartbreaking, brutally honest, powerful and moving look at the evils of war and specifically, WWII and its effects on the people of a small town in Italy. The cinematography is first rate and some of the scenes are the best directed I have ever seen - look out for the one in the church - it will leave you with your jaw hanging open.
It is unfortunate the reviewer above had technical difficulties with his copy. Don't let that put you off. You'd really be missing out on a truly remarkable, extraordinary ... Read More:
