This book was my favorite book when i was younger. it captured my imagination like no other book i read when i was in school and i must have read it hundreds of times. My mum forced me to buy it at a book fare when i was in school much to my dismay (i probably wanted a fluffy doggy puppy book or something like that) but i am so glad she did.

I was so excited when i found it in a box of some of my old things recently and i have just finished reading it again and it was just as great now as it ever was 15 years after i first got it. The book has stayed in my mind all this time, everytime i see an empty jam jar or a tin can open at both ends i think of it.

The perfect book for both boys and girls, i cant wait untill my ... Read More:

The Borrowers is about Pod and Homily and the thirteen-year-old Arrietty, a family of tiny people, just a few inches high, who live under the floorboards of an old country house in England. They exist and furnish their tiny home by "borrowing" scraps and oddments from the house above. To do this they have to go on daring raids to gather the items they need. The author makes it quite clear that this is not stealing, as the Borrowers only take items that would otherwise be neglected or thrown away. Mary Norton invented a wonderfully imaginative world with these books and they can still be read and enjoyed by children today.

I never read this book when I was a boy, and my children missed out on it too. I read it for the first time recently, and this weekend tried it out on my two grandchildren aged five and seven. They've never heard of Ted Hughes, and don't know what a poet laureate is, but they know a good story when they hear one. They came down from the ceiling, sat still and quiet, listened spellbound for the duration, then went happily off to sleep. The next 'night' I only had to mention The Iron Man and they were ready for it. What more could you ask from a children's book? The 'nights' are just long enough for reading to children as bedtime stories, and the language is simple enough for youngish children to be able to read it themselves. Even granddads can ... My Daughter is Home Schooled due to illness, her Tutor read this to her as part of her English lessons. The first chapter was captivating and got her hooked on the story, each week they would read a chapter and even I became interested.

The Story is about a teenage girl who is evacuated to Wales with her brother to live with a Shop owner and his sister.

Its an interesting read although not one I would have chosen for myself but as the book progressed I became more and more interested, I enjoyed listening to the tutor reading it aloud, it came alive (even Mums like stories read to them) even though I was in another room pretending to work!

To end the story we watched the DVD of the BBC TV production.
I intend to buy ... Read More:

This book's author, E. Nesbit, has written other stories including `The Railway Children', `The Enchanted Castle' and `The Phoenix & the Carpet'. This is her most well-loved, well-known and best-selling book.
She was born in London in the year of 1858, which is about 150 years ago now. The illustrator was H. R. Millar; here is a bit about him:
After studying art for a while, he began illustrating for magazines in Birmingham. Soon, he was invited to London by the editor of the Graphic, and worked for many periodicals, including the English Illustrated Magazine, Punch, and Good Words, and being a frequent artist on the Strand Magazine, where amid other work and he illustrated fiction by E. Nesbit.
This book is very famous. It is about five ... Read More:

This was a bizarre little book. It is a retelling of an old Welsh legend - a legend of a curse that is relived in each generation, again and again, in the same Welsh Valley. The main characters are Allison and Roger who are Step Siblings and Gwen is the son of the flitch - the wise man of the valley.

The book captivated and I could not put it down. Various kinds of discrimination and prejudice pervade the plot and the book is full of dark twisty turns in the plot and sub-plots, one of which is the condensation of the English to the Welsh and its corollary in the Welsh resentment of English wealth. The class divide is on many different levels: between a working class boy and richer children, between a land-owning family and a businessman's family and ... Read More:

Based on customer's positive reviews, I bought Journey to the Riversea for a 12 year old girl. Making the unusual decision to read the book first, has turned out to be a compelling, riveting read. I thoroughly enjoyed and agonised, wondering what was going to happen next. I'm now an Eva Ibbotson fan. This superbly written adventure story, with its unexpected twists and turns, happily kept me awake for most a night. An avid reader since childhood, I loved this story and the characters, the exception being the ghastly Carter twins and their parents. I'm not only satisfied the 12 year old will be as thrilled as I am with the book, I now have The Dragonfly Pool. I see no reason why at my grandmother age, I should miss out on the best of children's literature. Especially those ... Read More:

This book is a Puffin Classic. The children in this book are the same ones in `the Five Children and It' & `The Amulet'. Their names are Robert, Anthea, Jane, Cyril and baby Hilary, or as called in `the Five Children and It' - Lamb. If you don't know the story or have forgotten it, then I will jog your memory: It is about a second hand carpet that was bought for the nursery which had magical powers; it could transport them to wherever they wanted to go; also, a strange egg dropped out of it and it was the egg of a phoenix...
I thought that this book was ok. It was a bit boring at parts but some of the bits were more thrilling than going to the circus or even to Alton Towers! I would rate the book, overall, 8/ 10 and would recommend it to all!

The brilliance of the Railway Children is that E Nesbit refuses to talk down to her readers - she handles a variety of complicated emotions, and she does so in a way that enables us to see things we wouldn't have worked out for ourselves about the character, but that are very true and beautifully observed. Okay, a few too many things happen to these kids - even the film removed one or two sensational twists too many - but those things all bring new insights and emotional rewards. It's a great book.
