This has to be one of my favourites of the Very Short Introduction series and believe me, I've read a fair few of them. This introduces us to the idea that the Renaissance wasn't purely a European Italian-centric happening. Instead Brotton looks at the Renaissance at a global level, introducing us to ideas and events which shaped the way the modern world has grown, including the worlds of finance, mathematics and geographical conquest.

Each chapter is themed to such issues and Brotton moves around the globe introducing us to new ideas, thoughts and beliefs that helped define the renaissance. If you are expecting to learn about painting and literature, they are in there, but not a great deal. What is most impressive is the scope ... Read More:

This book is a well researched and a thorough introduction to the art of renaissance Italy. It contains lots of full-page colour illustrations and has a nifty timeline at the back of the book. The author talks about how the art was created and its purpose.
I was expecting a headache after the second chapter but I was surprised to find it lucid and not migraine inducing at all.
It would provide anyone with a reliable introduction to this subject.

No, this book is not a work of art. But among the mixed bag that is the 'very short introduction' series ( i own 7 currently )it's one of the better ones. A readable style and broad coverage, arranged by theme rather than chronology, combine to do exactly what it says on the tin.

So you get aesthetics, feminist perspectives, the purpose of galleries, the motivation of artists all deftly delivered by someone with an engaging turn of phrase and choice examples. The author lays her cards on the table throughout, with bits of 'I believe...', punctuated by an even handed exposition of the main arguments.

Two small gripes - I'd have liked a glossary and a few more illustrations, but these are but minor quibles. Overall, well worth ... Read More:

Dr Williamson has written a fine introduction to Christian Art—very readable, stimulating, clear, accessible and scholarly. A small gem of a book!

 : Art in Renaissance Italy
Anyone interested in Renaissance Italian Art should buy this book! It really is wonderful value because it has the clearest explanations that one could wish for. This is where the authors score, because every page is interesting and the short detours into perspective, the way frescoes were executed, bronzes cast, cathedrals planned etc., etc are fascinating.
The illustrations are consistently of the highest quality, many of them full page and in colour. You can return to this book time after time as something to be read for pleasure, and I commend the authors for their consistent clarity of exposition.

I think this book is brilliant, yet I am not 100% sure why it is in the Very Short Introduction series. It isn't really an introduction to contemporary art. If you don't know much about art, and you don't know much about contemporary artists, you aren't going to be very much the wiser after reading this book, at least at a basic level. It deals only sketchily with the work of artists, using them to illustrate points rather than to tell you much about them or the artists themselves. It doesn't really set out to tell you what art is either, in any easily identifiable way.
Having said that, it gets five stars in my book because it illustrates a fascinating view of art that I have never really been aware of before. Stallabras talks about contemporary ... Read More:

This is the kind of book that History of Art departments throw at you early on in their courses to instil the right respect and awe for the whole academic ritual.

When I first saw this book at Birkbeck College (2003 History of Art MA) I was duly impressed and intimidated into thinking this was somehow a classic. In this work Baxandall is the exemplary academic, slowly building up a case from painstaking research and cleverly interpreted trivia.

This approach is fine and dandy until you reflect that at the end of it the conclusions Baxandall has laboured so hard to arrive at are perhaps a little banal -- i.e. Renaissance painting was influenced by such contemporary phenomenon as religious practices, dancing, and the ability to judge ... A very short introduction to life under the Roman Empire would be a more accurate title, though to say this isn't really a criticism of this solidly written primer. It more than succeeds in giving a flavour of what it meant for the ordinary citizen to live under Roman rule, though perhaps those wanting to learn about the Empire for the first time would probably like a few more chronological narratives.

I did found the book to be a little patchy. It seems to get bogged down a little early in over detailed comparisons of how this obscure town in Asia Minor paid homage to the Emperor compared to another obscure town in Asia Minor down the Roman road. However, it more than comes to life when discussing matters such as the Christian conversion of the ... Read More:
