In the introduction, the editor, Malcom Bradbury, sets out his intention in producing this collection: one was to 'display...the achievement of some the best work produced by the strongest of...recent Britsh authors'; and the other, what Bradbury claims to be a more difficult task, to be 'broadly representative, so that the book might give not only a reasonable idea of the variety, but also the general trends and directions that have been taken by British fiction in the years since 1945'.

Bradbury succeeds in both attempts. This is not paritcularly surprising since this is Bradbury's territory. The collection contains works by some of the biggest names in British Literature: William Golding, Samuel Beckett, Graham Greene, ... Read More:

I had the opportunity to look at this book in some detail, as a set book for an A level English course, several years ago. The book contains a good cross-section of work from around 50 different poets, with a good mix of male/female and ethnic minority poets.

As a Scot myself, I particularly enjoyed the works of Liz Lochhead and Carol Ann Duffy but was also introduced for the first time to some examples of the writing of Lynton Kwesi Johnston.

The appeal of the book to me was that it offered a broad spectrum of work, from a wide range of poets of different backgrounds. No poet had more than 6 or so pieces of work included, which meant that the casual reader was not easily bored; if a particular poet did not appeal ... Read More:

Out of the 41 stories collected in this volume almost a half seems delicious to me. For instance:

Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Birthmark". One is plunged into the cosy and sedate atmophere of 19th century narration with its musing omniscient narrator from the very beginning - "In the latter part of this century there lived a man of science..." - and is bound to enjoy it, no matter what one makes out of the content: a conflict of (masculine) science and (feminine) nature, a meditation on impossibility of perfection in life, or a story of a man who could only love his fantasy... Another classic from the same decade, Poe's "The Fall of the House of Usher", needs no recommendation. Just one thing for those lovers of Poe's verses who don't ... Read More:

This book has been on my reading list for a creative writing course I teach for several years now, along with Maya Angelou, Michael Frayn, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Jenny Diski. And every year students have unanimously proclaimed this the best written and most impressive book on the reading list. Diaz has an ability to make writing seem effortless and artless. His settings and characters are real, the situations believable and the narrative voice compelling. He does not pander to the reader, retaining Spanish words with no glossary but they are used in a way that makes sense in their context and they provide a flavour of speech and thought that takes us into his world. The only writer I could fairly compare him with is Raymond Carver - the same ... Read More:

I have an old dog-eared copy of James Scully's 'Modern Poets on Modern Poetry' to which I have returned continuously over the years, as a dog to its bowl. But where Scully left off - with Charles Olson, Strong Words is just beginning. Not only does it add fifty badly needed years to this anthology of prose writings on poetry, but it also takes the brave, challenging step of mixing existing work with pieces commissioned from some of the finest contemporary writers - what the editors describe as 'the explicit manifesto and the unguarded moment.' Editors Herbert and Hollis are themselves poets of some considerable repute and though I would have liked to have seen a more even balance between American and Commonwealth writers, their selection is entertaining, ... Clearly aimed at the not-so-bright American who likes to think he/she is cultured. Many American poets and spellings. The cover of a miserable girl is off putting enough!

You are better off with Penguin's "Poetry for Life".

i'm not interested in (re)viewing this book in a context of contemporary british fiction but recently i've burrowed through a dozen or so short story collections in search of a refreshing read and this one struck me as the most intelligent, witty and fun of them all. obviously, "your mileage may vary" but still i dread to imagine what the pompous critics of this book actually consider a good read.

the "dogme-like" manifesto is a fun idea, and i even tracked down other works by these authors (and found most of their lengthier novels disappointing). so - confirmed is my faith in the short story format and i'd like to recommend this collection even to those who don't necessarily rate these authors' other work.
