I orignally bought this book to accompany a cassette I recieved as a gift many years ago! It contains 60 English Madrigals including: The Silver Swan; All creatures now; Weep, weep, mine eyes; Sleep, fleshy birth....and many others, by Byrd, Gibbons, Morley, Ramsey, and others! The madrigals are written for mixed voices in 3+ parts(occasionally dividing). It is an excellent resource for singing from, or for musical interest/research purposes.

The type is very good to read (although the translations underneath can be a little frustrating), the paper quality a little thin, but that would naturally increase the price and make it more bulky. What really pleases me about this collection is not only the collection itself (diverse and well chosen), but the details contained therein - the origins of the text and composers are well detailed, but also at the back are details of the origins of the piece, its possible orchestrations/original version etc. This is invaluable information that can be so hard to find. This volume is useful and scholarly - for example the alternative edition of Allegri's Miserere. A must buy for choirs.

One is somewhat spoilt for choice these days when it comes to recordings of specialist 'early music' vocal ensembles. In Britain alone, 'brand' names such as 'The Sixteen' and 'The Tallis Scholars', however different their respective approach, have become equally synonymous with excellence in ensemble, intonation, balance and blend. On this basis alone, one might be forgiven for mistaking this CD for another release from one of these fine, long-established choirs. However, this debut recording from 'Stile Antico' has something rather distinctive and individual to offer the listener. Wonderful music, it's such a pleasure to have a permanent record of much of the music played at the Proms concert. The review by Arturo Viola of this CD and also that of Kate Royal's latest are laughably pathetic - why someone so out of tune(pun intended) with the rest of the music world bothers to write this rubbish is unfathomable to me. I'm sure Mr Viola's reply will be 'everybody's entitled to their own opinion' - here's mine; you're an unutterable twerp.
