This practical guide to locating rarer species of butterfies in Britain is beautifully produced and appears to be pleasingly factually accurate.

"The Millennium Atlas of Butterflies of Britain and Ireland" of a few years ago set a really high bar for books on this subject, and this slimmer work by D F Newland in no ways tries to compete with the massive, authoratative "Atlas..." Instead, it is a labour of love by one writer, passing on details of 100 or so sites to explore where interesting butterfies can be found.

The fact that it is such a personal work is the real strength of this book, modern Nature works do not always convey the enthusiasm of the author(s), something every word and photograph accomplishes here. ... Read More:

A brilliant guide to the 60 or so Butterflies that inhabit Britain. It also includes the Butterflies that could possibly arrive as migrants, and shows every stage in the cycle of a Butterflies life, and has photos of the caterpillar of most species as well as their chryaslis.
It is done in the same style as 'Britain's Dragonflies' which is also a very handy guide.
These books have good clear photographs and I would highly reccomend them if you want to learn about Britain's Insects.

I can only agree with the previous reviewers. This modestly priced guide is also an outstanding work and a spin off from the excellent 'Field Guide to Moths...' by the same authors.

There are over 20,000 species of insect in the UK and over 2000 are moths. Not surprisingly, many books cover only selected species (and try to conceal this shortcoming) leaving one wondering if they are going to give a reliable identification. This book gets as close as one can to covering all the bases, as it has all the 'macro' moths (about 900 species, generally 1cm-2cm long and upwards).

The images are so much clearer in this book than those I remember from years ago (e.g. Richard South's two volume 'Moths of the British Isles'). These ... Read More:

I have only recently decided to take my interest in butterflies further by trying to learn more about them, and to attempt to identify them on sight alone. Because of this, I quickly started looking for a handy guide to the butterflies of Britain, and finally decided upon this one. I am glad I chose this as my beginning in discovering and learning more about these beautiful creatures.

The guide is put together very well. Each butterfly has 2 pages devoted to it. Information included about each butterfly consisits of a small map of Great Britain to show where the butterfly can be found, colour illustrations of both the male and the female, as well as showing the colours and markings of the underside of the wings, as well as details of what stage they are ... Coming at this book as someone who knew very little about butterflies, I thought I'd choose this title as I'm a huge fan of the Collins Bird Guide in the same series.

However, while the information and plates in this book are excellent, it can be a very difficult book to navigate for the beginner, sorted purely by taxonomic order which doesn't always seem obvious to people with limited knowledge, and the keys at the start of the book to aid identification are not the easiest follow.

Perhaps damningly, I still find myself checking my more generalist insect field guides for butterfly IDs.

Another problem is the lack of drawings of caterpilars, which would have been vary useful.

These gripes aside, for someone with more ... Read More:

I'm a huge fan of Francis Rose, and the last wildflower key is a classic that I still use on a daily basis. This revised edition is very clear and concise; the keys are much improved from the last edition, the plastic cover limits water damage in the field and the regional AWI list from Keith Kirby in the back of the book is invaluable.

However, there are two points that make this book a 4 star rather than a 5 star book: Firstly the book to slightly too big for a field guild and is a bit too heavy. Secondly, sadly this revised edition still contains errors with some outdated Latin names; in particular some of the orchid species names are outdated, despite having changed several years before this book was printed, hmm...

Despite these issues it ... Read More:

As always Oliver Rackham's readable style of writing comes to the fore, whether you are a student, expert or layman you'll always find something interesting in this and all his other books. I feel that his criticisms and "biased" opinions all add to his charm, something that is lacking in the more dry and fusty scientific texts. Also Dr Rackham's passion and enthusiasm shine through in every sentence!!

Like most of the recent new naturalists, this book was well worth the wait. The previous new naturalist on the subject was published in 1960, and has been out of print and eagerly sought by collectors for many years. This new volume brings in the many changes to our understanding of the group that have occurred since then, and does so in a readable and understandable way. My only real irritation with the volume is the "double handling" necessary to get to a reference, as other reviewers have mentioned. All in all though, a great addition to the series.
