Following an invitation to hold a series of seminars on the phenomenology of mental illness in the Department of Psychiatry of the University of Manitoba, Frank Fish brought together the classic descriptions of psychiatric symptoms which, at that time, were not easily found in the English literature. The seminars were published in 1967 and 'Fish's Clinical Psychopathology' rapidly became an essential text for medical students, psychiatric trainees and practising clinicians. After his death the text was revised and updated by the late Max Hamilton in 1974 and 1985.

'Fish's Clinical Psychopathology' was out of print for several years but has now been re-issued by the Royal College of Psychiatrists in a third edition. The authors, ... Read More:

: Oxford Handbook of Psychiatry (Oxford Handbooks Series)
As always Oxford have outdone themselves. A must for anyone working in this branch "medicine" be they Doctors, Nurses or HCAs. Reading this book really brings home the fact that often mental health treatment is just a blind stab at making sense of the most complex of problems. The book may also be the best piece of artillery against the medical model yet. Pay attention to the introduction to personality disorder as this it is quite alarming given the sociopolitical tension at the moment.

This book covers the idea proposed by Engel of a Biopshicossocial model for mental health. Its a good source for a quick review of the main thoughts in the Biological, social and posychological models of mind. Each chapter is well written, with up to date references (although it's almost impossible to keep track of all the developments on each field.) The flagrant exception is when it comes to object relations theory (psychoanalysis). Bion is one of the most influential thinkers of this theory today but he isn't even mentioned.

But the big let down is the author's use and understanding of Engel's model. What Dilts basically say is that depending on the patient's problem, you can shift though theories. If X suffers from anxiety, you use ... Read More:

: ICD-10 : The ICD-10 Classification of Mental and Behavioural Disorders : Clinical Descriptions and Diagnostic Guidelines
As a nurse lecturer in mental health nursing I have had recourse to this text since my student days. I would never have got through my training without its concise, definitive information on mental disorders. J. Soap PhD may write a lovely book about "Schizophrenia", and J. Doe MSc may have a wonderfully descriptive text on "Depression", but don't waste your time on someone's opinion of what a disorder is or might be - the ICD-10 offers nothing less than the definitive, universally accepted (okay, so the Yanks have their DSM-IV, they're welcome to it!) descriptions of exactly what these disorders are. The language used is very carefully thought out and there is even a section in the introduction explaining how careful the compilers have been to use language ... Read More:

Unfortunately this book series seems to be going the way of the Oxford "cheese and onion" handbook. It started off a few years ago as a very concise readable guide that had all the essentials you needed as a prescriber. As the editions progressed it has become more and more bloated, and this latest version is the largest yet. It includes tons of pointlessly redundant information, and has made the 'fast facts' hard to find. It's like lugging around a full-blown textbook with you rather than a handy quick-reference guide.

The information in it is still solid, and it's still 'the bible' for psychiatrists, but they really need to cut out some of the cruft for the next edition instead of continually expanding for expansion's sake.

This is extremely useful if you are new to mental health. I recommend this as an essential textbook to all my students going on placement or new practitioners starting work in this field. It provides an accessible overview of most of the key issues in mental health rather than being diagnosis-focussed as many texts are. This is the sort of book I wish had been available when I was a student.

This book is clearly set out and would help any Occupational Therapist get to grips with a number of concepts, including models and psychological theories and approaches. The book covers the OT process well, including information on assessment, planning treatment, the implementation of treatment and evaluation. The chapters on the O.T's role in Mental Health and Occupation and activity in treatment were very helpful.
Although it covers some pretty heavy topics it is really easy to read!!!

This book is one of the increasing variants of the ICD10, or at least that section, namely F1-100 that relates to psychiatry. Smaller than its big brother and easier to carry around, it is useful for quick reference for the ICD10 numbers and to ensure patients meet criteria for diagnosis. If you need to learn the ICD10 for MRCPsych it is less useful as it misses out the wider discussion of diagnosis found in the main book, and doesn't really cover what you will need for the exam.It is best considered as a ward book and for those doing research, as it also carries the criteria necessary for diagnosis in the stricter research field. It is a useful book but not essential, and if you already have the original this will be superfluous.

During my placement, one of my educators gave me this book to read especially on OT process. I found it quite easy to read and understand. The author went directlyb to the relevant points. I found I had to read it only once and was able to apply the proces, and not feel lost while out on assessment. I immediately knew what to look for when I was assessing a patient.
It would be nice if other books were written more readable, understandale, less daunting loose the jargons and student friendly.
